Just wanting to know. I really want to upgrade my suspesion but cant really afford to do springs and shocks at the same time. As the front right hand strut is leaking oil I was just wondering if you can put upgraded ones in with standard springs on and change springs later . I want a 2 inch lift in the end . Also looking at the tjm shocks and advice

yes you can upgrade shocks without doing springs.
thing is with the front end you need to disassemble the unit again to replace the springs when the time comes so effectively you need to disassemble the unit twice to get the same outcome.
for the extra parts cost of doing the springs it might be better getting the whole kit done now to save on the extra labour cost (or time if you are doing it yourself) in the future.
At a guess you might get charged ~$200 in labour to do the 4 springs later on down the track or about 3-4 hours of your time at home in the shed

I agree with dhula.
Unless the strut is absolutely gushing out oil I would just knuckle down and save your pennies for the complete kit. As dhula explained the labour cost (or your time) will out weigh the extra couple of hundy for a set of springs.
Just my opinion mate.

there is a lot of tension on the front spring but a good quality set of spring compressors can do the job.
Don't get cheepo shit if your guna get some, pay some good money for some good quality compressors. Even good quality ones get a hard time tho. I've used single hook end ones (4 of them per spring) when I've done it. Didn't like the two hooks per end variety due to the narrow diameter of the spring, just didn't sit right for my liking.
I've found some suspension places that have the floor mounted strut compressor are happy to do it for about $10 per strut.
If you are going to get springs and shocks at the same time, maybe think about getting a top plate also as these do wear in the top bush area. that way you can ask for the whole thing to be assembled when you pick it up saving you a bit of time (just take one out, put the new one in). From Toyota last time I priced them they were about $135 each. I got some from pedders recently for about ~$70 each.

Re assembly is different. You will find you need to compress the spring until you think the spring compressors are gonna snap - thats why you need good quality tools. Then they are a bastard to get out afterwards.
I agree with dhula above. If you are inexperienced then think about getting the supplier to compress and fit them for you. Then just fit the strut to your front end.

cheers for the advice . Havent done struts before but I am a 3rd year diesel mechanic so have mechanical experience. but I like the idea of getting a top plate and i guess a new nut and getting them to do it. but will need a spring compresser for the rears anyway

At worst you might need to disconnect the swaybar links to get a bit more droop. A burly mate is all you will need here.
The top shockie mounts are a totally different kettle of fish.....
