  • Switch lights on Grande's A/C is gone?

    Hi guys,

I've recently noticed something odd about the switch lights on my Grande's aircond control switches. The green LEDs which light up the text of the switches appears to have gone. So when driving at night, I can't see the switches. Only the central row has gone. The 4 button cluster on the left and right are still fine. (The left cluster is the front & rear window demisters and passenger side temperature up/down. The right cluster is system on and driver's temp up/down). Although the right cluster went off a few times but a sharp slap on the plastic trim below the buttons brought the lights back to life and it seems to be OK now.

The buttons are all functioning correctly. The LED lights to show that the aircond system is ON and the aircond is ON are working fine. Only the LEDs that light up the text has gone.

I took off the console to have a look behind to see if any plugs are lose and they all seem fine. I plugged and unplugged the 3 directly behind the switches. The module looks pretty well sealed, otherwise I would take a look at the PCB.

Anyone encountered this problem? Or can give some suggestions....

Problem solved. Pulled the dash apart to get to the PCB behind the switches. There are 5 globes with green condom covers that illuminate the text across all switches. The 3 in the middle were blown. While in the process of using one of the good ones to test in the 3 blown positions, it blew too.

I now have 8 on order from Newtown Toyota in Welshpool as the Melbourne warehouse only had 3. Cost is $3.60 ea + $12.50 air bag. The part number is 90010-05101 which was located from toyodiy.com website. Note that these are globes and not LEDs. They are shaped like LEDs and one would imagine that Toyota would put LEDs in there, but no....

Hey Amts-which size are they?Similar to the wedge style as found in the side of the doors or smaller?
Might look at the option of led upgrade if possible also...

        Hi Wes,

It looks more like the one in Fig. 9 from your link. However, the hole in the PCB is 6mm diameter.

Here is the toyodiy website. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_G_2005_T ... _8715.html
It says the globe is 14V & 1.12W. Is that compatible?

Here are some photos of the globe:

And here is the PCB. Arrows are pointing to 2 of the holes in the PCB.

Re: Switch lights on Grande's A/C is gone?

            Well what an epic night.

The bulbs arrived from WA the next day which is great but open it up to see that they weren't in bubble wrap when it was specifically requested. However, the filament in the bulbs looked OK. Parents are arriving tomorrow and the Prado has been freshly detailed but the centre console is all apart. So the console has to go back in tonight as the Prado is the limo for the weekend.

Had no troubles fitting the globes back in. After a quick test, they were all fine. Now to put it back together. After reconnecting the sat nav, I found the reverse wire has broken off the crimped contact. Whoever did the install of the reverse camera didn't do a good job and by not using a proper connector. Instead, they just used a contact from the connector. So I now have to disconnect all the cables from the satnav and out comes the soldering iron. But first, I have to peel the crimps apart. Managed to solder the wire onto the contact but managed to get a drop of solder into the centre of it. So now the contact won't go onto the pin, will it? Managed to get the drop of solder out and start to reconnect the satnav again.

Connected the cables at the rear of the air-cond controls, then inserted the ash tray surrounds. Great! I'm on the home run now. Inserted the trim around the vents and now its just the trim around the gear lever to go. I then see this metal plate in the box where I have been keeping all the bits that came from the centre console. Bugger! It's some shield that goes between the air-cond controls and the satnav. I can't just leave it out, can I?

So I have to take everything out again. When I got to the ash tray surround, I heard an unusual click as I pulled it off. One of the clips had fallen off and has gone behind the centre console. I proceeded to remove the console around the gear lever and handbrake but couldn't see the clip. It's dropped somewhere else so I'll have to fish that out later. I first need to get this shield back in. So disconnected all the cables from the air-cond controls and satnav. Re-installed the shield and now to fish for that clip. Found the clip and put it back where it should be.

Reconnected all 10 cables into the satnav (again!), 3 cables into the air-cond controls and tested that everything still works (which it did). The ashtray surround went back in. Vents are in as well. Console around gear lever and handbrake also in. And the last silver trim now in.

What was supposed to take an hour took 3.

That strikes me as a red flag... whatever caused the 3 in the middle to blow also blew a test bulb immediately?

I guess if your replacements are now working then don't mess with "wot's not broken". But if they blow again could there be some component failure on the PCB causing an overvoltage?

Otherwise the only explanations that I can think of for the test bulb blowing straight away would be either a coincidence or that it was "about to go also" and you that you may have added to it's stress during the removal/insertion testing procedure.

Or that electrical troubleshooting rarely adheres to any logic known to man.

Do you know what voltage the bulbs are rated at? (eg 12V or 5V?) - I'm no expert btw, just interested.

Re: Switch lights on Grande's A/C is gone?

In my earlier post, I mentioned that a fourth bulb was out but it came back on when I slapped the dash. This was the test bulb. The filament was probably broken but the slap brought it back to being connected. So it was already dodgy.

Also mentioned in another post is the 14V rating of the bulb.

I've replaced all 5 bulbs now & time will tell if there is a board problem or its gonna go for another 7 years.
