  • How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

    Hi All,

Well my D4D is now out of warranty and I am keeping it long term, so I have decided to do my mods.
As well as the Sahara Bar & OME lift kit, I am looking at fitting a chip, 3" exhaust and snorkel for better performance, especially when towing.

    So I have 2 questions:
    1) The 4x4 shop is advising to put in a rapid chip and 3" exhaust from a place in Sandgate Brisbane, but they are sending it there as they have the dynos etc. Wondering if anyone knows of who this might be and maybe has used them.

    2) Is there a willing participant in Brisbane who has done this similar mod (any chip) who would like to show it off to me. I am based in Brisbane and can come to you to have a look, but I really want to know how much noisier this will make the car. The wife is the daily driver and I couldn't stand to have to undo the mods if it is too noisy, so hoping to hear it for myself before I do the mods.

If you can help me out please PM me.
    Thanks

PS: I will be getting rid of a TJM nudge bar if anyone is interested.

rosco5, the exhaust noise level will depend on the type of system you install. If you go with a straight through muffler (most will be) then it will be a slight increase in noise, especially under load. They can install a more baffled muffler which will keep things pretty standard. If you go 3", make sure its from the dump pipe back and they replace the CAT with a better flowing one.

With the snorkel, if you drive with the drivers window down, you will notice an induction noise, every time you accelerate. If window is up, again it is bearly noticable.

I agree with your suggestion of catching up with someone local who has done the mods so you can try before you buy.

Oh, these have been by far the best mods I have done.

Re: How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

Found the Youtube link thanks, it is a good start.

Not too bad, interesting how much of a turbo noise you can hear in the video. Is that coming through the exhaust or just loud enough from the front to still hear it when standing a metre off the tailpipe?

Getting keen to start the mods. Trawling through mountains of comparison posts about which snorkel, chip, exhaust, suspension and bullbar. Just need to finalise all my choices. Leaning towards Airtec (I want it for performance not dust bowls so I like the look better), Steinbuer or Rapid (based on 4WD monthly tests), unsure of exhaust, OME Medium Lift, and Sahara Bar. Given there is a mix of suppliers here, I can't get it all done at the one place unless someone knows a 4wd workshop that can supply and fit all those brands in the one place in Brisbane?

Toying with whether to do the changes gradually so it is not too much of a shock to the better half or to just bite the bullet and put it in for a week and get everything done at once.

Hope to hear from one of the Brissy guys who may want to show of his rig to get me over the line. I reckon it is about a $7K investment for everything so want to get it right.

Re: How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

          Hi,

Have run a 3" Manta system with DP Chip for a year or so now. Muffler is "straight through" and it was pretty noisy - distinct droning in the rear. Had a Lukey (I think) resonator fitted at the rear and this helped but the system is definately noisier than standard. Be aware that it can get tiresome on long trips if you are towing a decent load - constant droning for hours on end. When not towing though it is fine.

Induction noise from a safari snorkel is fine and not even too much wind noise.

Watch out with the motor going into limp mode with some chips (not just DP Chip) - mine has done it a couple of times and it can be a bit disconcerting if you are trying to pass a road train !

Overall power increase from the mods though is fantastic

Re: How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

            G'day,
I had a Steinbuer chip & a tipan 3" exhaust fitted to my 2004 model auto Prado which I have owned since new. Having recently returned from a 5000km trip the vehicle's performance was beyond my expectations. I would recommend this modification to anyone who is not happy with the standard 96Kw. I feel that the vehicle is now safer to drive out on the highway as you no longer need an eternity to over take road trains which are up to 53m long.Pulling out into traffic where you have to get up to 110kmph or in most cases 120kmph to keep up with the flow of the traffic is no longer a problem.
During the testing/tuning phase it was discovered that the boost was reaching 14 pound and exhaust temperatures were excessive. To combat this the diesel specialist contacted the manufacturer who recommened that a boost limiter be fitted. This knocked approx. 40 degrees off the exhaust temperature. During the trip the temp gauge didn't move out side its normal operating position. The turbo lag was gone, acceleration was smooth & strong and gear changes through the auto box were contunious, not like standard where it wouldn't like to budge out of 3rd gear and the engine would be reving its head off and you would only be half way around a truck.
As for the noise of the 3" exhaust system... It has a nice sporty sound that is not excessive and wont get you booked.
As for cost, Yeah it was dear approx $3500. but worth every cent. I will be doing the same modification when I eventually up date in the future.

Re: How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

                Hey,

I've had the Dtronic chip, snorkle and 3" exhaust for about a year or two now.

                Snorkle = essential
Dtronic = Ok. Idles better, less turbo lag, unsure about better economy and increased power
                Exhaust = better everything

Average calculated fuel economy over 5000km trip to Cameron's Corner with fully loaded Prado (no trailer) = 13.3 L/100km.

One problem... You get used to the initial power and then you want more. The more you get the more you need! You can never be satisfied!

Try the link below. I tried filming it with the video camera, but it took forever to load onto youtube so I just used my iphone. Picture and sound quality is prob not there so I might have to do a better job some other time.

Re: How much noisier chipped, 3" exhaust & Snorkel

Didn't really answer the question did I? Got all carried away with how good I was at posting my first video on YouTube and forgot to say that its really only the exhaust that makes the noise. The snorkle does too but only marginally and its more of a sweet whistling type of a tune. The chip doesn't have any impact on noise at all.

I feel the exhaust could probably do with a slight muzzling. From the inside, it doesn't drone when cruising, but it does make some noise when you put the foot down.

Its a custom job. 3" all the way down to just before the rear axle. At this point the straight through muffler was attached and then the original pipe was reattached. The exhaust guy said the gases would be much cooler at this point and therefore didn't require as much room to expand so the original diameter pipe would suffice. Also it may have helped reduce the drone a bit.
