  • (Auto) Manual Lock-Up TC Kit For Prado

I've got a manual, but I came across this today and thought it might be of some use for those with an auto:

Latest news from Wholesale Automatic Transmissions is our Lock-Up Manual control unit for all 4 speed Nissan Patrols, Toyota 80/100 series Land Cruisers, Prado 4 & 5 Speed with Automatic Transmissions. Designed to manually control the Lock-Up convertor.
    More info

No association with this mob, but if I had an auto I think I might have been interested in one of those...

Does anyone have one, or something similar (they don't look very complicated)

Matt and i spoke about this kit about 2-3 months ago.
we both said no as we didn't like the full lock-up (disengage before stall).
means you have something else to think or do when slowing/stopping.
we both do long highway/freeway runs, and whats the chances of remembering 100kms,
when your offramp appears or the freeway ends.
we then were looking at their valve body kit builds. this is a better option, but would also be move $$$

Just a little confused, why would you have it on @ highway speeds?

My Prado (4speed auto) already locks up in 3rd & 4th, I only need it to lockup in 1st/2nd & then only when I'm in 4L(ocked).....

With the 5 speed auto, the 100kmh cruising rpm (approx. 1800rpm) is below the hydraulic lock up rpm (approx. 2500rpm). If towing, the extra load can cause the electronic torque converter lock to unlock causing a slip = heat and greater fuel consumption.
If you were only installing a manual lock for highway driving it would be simpler just tow with the transmission shifted back to 4th rather than "D". Thus increasing the cruise speed RPM above the hydraulic lock up level so the torque conveter isn't slipping.

That said, I am seriously considering installing one of these manual locks - primarily for down hill crawling in low range. I just need to confirm that it will work in first gear without havig to change to a heavy duty transmission valve body.

The only heat that would be generated is during the half second between gear changes when the lockup clutch disengages to allow smoother gear changes.....unless you end up towing in 2nd for an extended amount of time

I see no benefit for use on the highway as the lockup unit should lockup & not slip at all....& thus no heat generation...

RE the valve body, yes I think it is required according to their blurb.....

The Prado 5 speed auto will absolutley unlock the torque convert in 4th and 5th gears geratating a lot of heat.
When locked up the auto trans fliud will be below 50 degrees. If towing at highway speeds it is quite common to have a load that will cause the torque converter to unlock and slip without down shifting, allowing the engine to produce more torque to satisfy the load. In this situtation the trans fluid temp can head north of 100 degrees within a couple of minutes.
A perfect example of this is the over temp issues with the 150 auto trans. It is the same transmission as the 120, it has just been reporgrammed to hang onto taller gears longer in an attept to improve fuel ecomony. This causes the torque converter to slip for longer before down shifting, hence the over heating.
I have an auto trans fluid temp gauge fitted a can clearly watch what this happening when towing. If my trans is slipping in 5th and the temperature is getting too high, I simply manually pull the transmission back to 4th which increases the rpm causing the torque converter into hyraulic lock up and reducing the fuild temp.

This manual lock simple allows you to over ride the torque converter electronic lock/unlock and stopping the transmission from slipping when below hydrauilc lockup rpm.

As for whether a heavy duty valve body is needed in a Prado for first gear lock up, I have had a couple of conversations with wholesale automatics and they indicated that it "probably" wouldn't be needed in a Prado. But I need to speak with them some more and get a definative answer.

Looking at this can we have a system that when the car wants to lockup the torque converter stays locked until either you turn it off or touch the brake, similar to cruise control. I thought a 3 position switch - 1 off, 2 auto (locks and stays locked until brake applied), and 3 push to lock.
Has anyone got any knowledge on how this could be done?

Its disappointing if the 5 speed does this, my 4 speed doesn't have this behaviour at all. It only unlocks to change gear & then it locks straight back up again (3rd to 4th & 4th to 3rd gear changes)

                Rusty62

Sounds good, I would suggest that 3 push to lock would only be available when in low range.....

This concept for low range anyway is probably 5 years off being not required since I'm guessing all new cars will soon come out with downhill assist of some sort....

Hey guys does anybody know how much this kit would cost.

                  Thanks

Not to worried locking in low range, although not like my old 120 manual the auto in not to bad only needing light brake to keep slow. I also find the DAC to fast when towing the trailer so have mastered footbrake control.
My main interest is to lower the engine RPM and auto oil temp.
Spoke to the supplier of the kits mentioned above cost = approx $200 but does not unloack until you turn it off. The electric circuit is not hard to build but all i need is the wiring diagram of the ECU for the torque converter.

If anyone has the wiring diagram, could i have a copy?

I copied this from Toyota120.com . I downloaded the circuit but could not find the plugs etc.

The 4Runner wiring diagrams in in the electrical section. The transmission is the A750, so the wiring will be very similar so you can likely leverage those.

interesting info, you seem quite knowledgeable on the 5-speed - would you (or anyone) know if the torque converter locks in 3rd gear in the 5-speed? we bought a 120-series vx (4-litre) second hand recently and while I have learned not to bother with 5th (Drive) when towing I find I need to go as far back as 3rd to get up some hills with the camper on the back

I spoke recently with Ozbush regarding building a full plug and play version of torque converter lock up module with a function to automatically unlock when the vehicle slows to a predetermined speed as well as a towing function that will override the brake cut out. He said he'd be happy to look at doing one if there is enough interest.
