  • 1KZ-TE oil leak from bell housing

    Hi

I have quite a lot of oil dripping from the bell housing. It seems to be worse when I first fill it up with oil after a change, then settle down later.
It seems worse if its parked up hill... anyhows.

I assume its the main bearing oil seal. Sigh.. looks like a lot of work to change a $20 part.

    Some opinions/advice please...

Is my assumption right, or is there something else around there that it might be? While its open, what else should I get changed? It has a 12 month old clutch (DOH!!)
    The engine has done 220,000ks

How long can I leave it, I am a single parent and its the only car I have access to, so school holidays would be good, can I wait?

How much oil is actually dripping? Is it a few drops each night or more.

Bit more then a few drips but not much more... its not puddles, Its been a couple of weeks since I changed the oil and it doesn't seem to be any lower on the dip stick.

This might sound dumb and condescending (and it's not meant to be) but are you sure it is leaking from the bell housing? The oil filter has a recess that catches oil that runs out when you change the filter. This goes into a small hose that runs down near the sump plug where it is open to the world. Usually during an oil change this spilt oil will run into the same container as the sump oil but the oil doesn't all run out. If a lot has been spilled when the filter was changed the hose can still have a fair bit in it when you drive off, especially if the hose is a bit muddy. I have had a couple of 'bad' services and oil dripped onto the garage floor some 6+ hours later and the bottom of the gearbox was smeared with oil. I know you have a few ks on board but make sure it is a rear seal before you pull the box.

Not condescending at all, but unfortunately not the cause. If I had a picture of the area its quite obvious, however more searching has suggested that a rocker cover leak at the rear of the engine presents similarly to my leak. Unfortunately it isn't that either.

            Thanks anyhows.

Geez. I just checked the engine manual and its not a high skill job. Time consuming and a major pain in the butt. If I had a hoist and all the tools I think I could do it myself. Of course it would take 100 times longer that a professional, but I am pretty sure I could do it. When I was younger I changed the clutch in my old RWD corolla, on my back, with the front of the car on ramps...

Bit more involved than the Rolla mate. Extra shaft to unbolt and the gearbox/transfer probably weighs nearly as much as yor Corolla.

I am unfamiliar with the actual seal set up but the rest of the job is not all that hard. In my experience I prefer to do 4x4 clutches/boxes etc on the ground (with some decent chassis stands). Reason being: when using a hoist, no matter how hard you try it is near impossible to get a 4x4 gearbox/transfer to balance on a transmission jack (slightly better if its auto - nice flat pan). They are dangerous and unstable.

I prefer to use a couple of strategically placed trolley jacks and just wiggle the 'box back far enough to do the job than wiggle it back in.

Sure, it is still possible to drop the 'box on the ground but 8" is better than 4ft I think.

                  Just my thoughts dereki...

Yeah true more work for sure, but when I looked I was surprised at how easy it *looks* to change the seal, it can be cut out and replaced (according to the manual) after the fly wheel is removed. Its a slip over and tap into place job.

Anyhow, I don't have stands, jacks, and the seal seating tool, so by the time I purchase all that stuff, it starts to become easier to just pay someone to do the whole lot.
And I am a bit lazier than I was when I was 20

Re: 1KZ-TE oil leak from bell housing

It started leaking a lot, so I got it done, before the clutch got contaminated.

Motorama 4x4xMore was a bit more than the cheapest local guy I could find, but did it same day I got them to look at it.

It turns out that when I got a new clutch fitted 18 months ago, they did put in a new main bearing seal... $32 for the part.
Unfortunately out of warrantee. The genuine Toyota part... $91

If you get a clutch done, and replace the main bearing seal... make sure they put in a genuine Toyota seal.
