  • 12v Wiring Help

    G'day all,

After being quoted over $200 from the local auto elec to wire in some plugs from my Aux Battery I thought I will give it a go myself.

I have wired up spotlights and radios before but thats about it.

Here are the plugs I'm putting in the back of the car:

    http://www.baintech.com.au/sockets/bain ... iga-socket
    http://www.baintech.com.au/sockets/bain ... r-+-ciga-s

I just ducked down to Jaycar and have grabbed the following:

-4 metres of red 25amp red cable 100MRL
-4 metres of red 25amp black cable 100MRL
    -2 inline 20amp fuse holders/fuses
    -Solder and Solder iron
    -Battery terminal ring/eyelets

Is there anything else I will need, or is something I have wrong?? Also, to run both plugs should I split the wire at the back or run two seperate lines from the battery to the rear?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Re: 12v Wiring Help

Hi Rusty and mate that cable is way to thin. You will end up with a fair bit of voltage drop which will mean your fridge won’t run all that well.

    That’s 5mm auto ( about 2.5mm2 ) and the minimum size cable PER PLUG is 6mm auto ( 4.5mm2 )

Here’s a diagram of how to set up with the correct size cable to minimise voltage drop and you should be able to source all the parts locally.

Ahhh shhhht. I thought having 25amp cable would have been enough  Looks like I will be heading back with the below diagram to get some bigger gear.

If the sockets are 20amp then the fuses will need to be 20amp hey?

And with that little cable splitter, how many times can you split it? As I have 3 plugs that need power and earth.

Thanks a heap for your help mate, really appreciate it.

Can't get better advice than Drivesafe's

I'm not sure about running 20 amps through a cig lighter socket - even if it is "Heavy Duty" - you'd be looking at Anderson connectors or similar to run that sort of current.
I'd be sticking with the 15 amp fuse for each socket. Still be OK for for the fridge.

          Re: 12v Wiring Help

the size of the fuse that you use is to protect the accessory you will be running, but not above your system minimum (20amp socket).
your fridge should be fine with a 15amp fuse.
as for how many accessory sockets you wire-in, you can't use more amps than that of what your main power supply wires are rated at.
so you could have 10 sockets connected (each running 5 amps) if your main cable/wires are rated at 50amps. (just keeping it simply to understand)
so that is why most of us on here that run our own wires, will use large guage wire to allow for voltage drop over extended distances,
          and room to upgrade later

Went down to Jaycar today and showed them the diagram.

Now have 8 gauge Wire which is something around 120amps. And some 4 Gauge wire which is around 62amps.

Cannot find one of the cable splitter things though. Anyone know where I can get one?

Hi Rusty, I have decided to use a Bus Bar to distribute my power. I intend to run heavy duty cable to the rear and attach to the Bus Bar and then take off power to two cig sockets, one low voltage socket and my compressor.

I can recommend the site below as reliable with fast postage and good prices. You will find the Bus Bar at the bottom of the page

Hi, you have a few options really, *solder the joint and heat shrink it or Use BP connectors and heat shrink..you dont have to heat shrink but its good practice* The "splitter" is commonly called a terminal block * or you can use a fancy expensive version of such. Being a leccy i just use bp's for conveniance. Cheers

                    Hey Alan,

I was having a quick look through that site before but didnt see those. So I'm guessing you hook your pos and neg up to the seperate sides then run your plug wires off the other screws with little eyelets? How do you stop it from arching out?

It looks the goods, as I could run 5 aux lines from the rear of the vehicle. Planning 3 plugs in the boot, led bar off the cargo barrier and another plug behind the spare carrier outside the vehicle.

                    Thanks a heap mate

Something not quite right with your wire sizing. 8 ga should be lower current rating than 4 ga...

I ran 6 B&S from the auxiliary through a fuse block to the back. Then fitted one of these to the 6B&S:

Jaycar 1 in 4 power distribution block. Jaycar also stock the fuse holders for large cable, it's what the doof doof brigade use to wire in their really sick sound stuff. I mounted the block near the jack.

From that ran four amphenol outlets with 6mm2 wire to each from the outlets in the block. Crimped any fittings that bolted on and wrapped the 1 in 4 block fittings with copper shim and screwed the set screw into the wire/copper sheath.

Hi Rusty, as Michael posted, you have the current rates back to front, or as I suspect, you have the gauge labels back to front.

Just to make thing easy, all B&S, AWG and G sizes, the higher the number the thinner the cable. Go Figure?

                        So it’s your 8G ( 7.9mm2 ) that has a 62 amp rating and the 4G ( about 20mm2 ) has the 120 amp rating.

I will grab a couple of those distribution blocks this week. And order one of those c/b covers from ABR.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Rusty, I don't know if you have picked up the sockets yet but I purchased a couple of them from ARB and was charged about $25.00 but then I stumbled into an electronics store near my work and was able to pick up the inverdual sockets (no box bracket like in the first image) for about $5.00 each. Not 100% sure they are the Baintech brand BUT they are identical in everywhay to the Baintech including markings. If you are after a few then have a look in some of those little electronmics stores. I'm sure they will have them.

                              Hey mate,

Yeh I bought the above Baintech ones a while back. Although I will be after a single plug for the exterior of the vehicle in the next couple of weeks.
