    G'day all

New to the site, and must say its a wealth of knowledge. I currently have a 2000 Prado which is pretty stock standard. About to purchase a camper trailer and am thinking i will need to update the suspension due to the extra load.

Have 3 small kids and even not towing anything the bag sags a bit when loaded up for a trip away.

So what would be the preferred set up for more lift and better towing performance?

    Any advise much appreciated

    Cheers

    Re: Suspension Advice

hey austin welcome to prado point, as for your suspension question there a plenty of good brands out there on the market ranging from about $800 to $2000 and more the only limit is your wallet, brands like old man emu, TJM, ironman, toughdog , bilstein are all very good, you will always get different opinions but what you get in the end is up to you, there plenty of threads in the 90s section have a read and see what you you like, you also have to work out what your towing, how heavy it is, do you intend on add any accessories to your vehicle (these all add more weight), when you know what you want you could always go down to a local suspension dealer and see what they recommend, also go around to differnet places for more opinions and prices. cheers samo

      welcome austin

I would agree with Samo, but also suggest you consider air bag helpers in the rear that can be adjusted to suit the different weights. I find that when I am not towing, letting the air out of the bags returns the car to a more subtle ride.

Go for EFS, they are well priced, the kit is matched to suit your vehicle, so you get an excellent ride, yo get a bit more wheel travel also. The Bilstiens are very expensive for what you get and then they are only shocks, so you then have to find springs that will suit the valving of the shocks, I would not touch ironman with a 10 foot pole, nor would I touch the Tuff dogs or Ruff dogs as I call them.

          Re: Suspension Advice

Thanks for the replies and advice. One brand i was considering was the Ironman as they seem reasonably priced. Sounds like they are worth steering clear of. Budget is also a consideration as I am planning on upgrading in 2 years max so dont want to spend 2 much on the car. That being said I would rather pay a little more for quality.

Wha would be a ball park figure for the suspension upgrade and airbags set up for a brand such as OME, or EFS?

            Re: Suspension Advice

as i said before everyone has different opinons, i have had ironman supension under my car for 3 years now and 70k, just replaced the front struts because the bottom bush was worn, springs and rear shocks r holding up well, if you do decide to get ironman i would get the foamcell schocks. im very happy with what i have, it just comes down to what you want

My old man has also put ironman foamcell shocks on his 120 series prado and had no problems, took it out west and they performed well. Crooza is ur comment about the ironmans from personal experience or word of mouth?

A bit of both, I have actually seen many sets of Ironman shocks leak, they also snap the eyes or pins off of them

                  Re: Suspension Advice

everyones opinions and needs and wants and expectations about suspension is as different and varied as the suspension they get.

For what it's worth, on my prado i have tried
                  1. a full OME kit = would never get them again as the shocks went off very quickly in even simple off road country and the springs did not hold up well over 40,000 kms of what I would call average family use
                  2. a full pedders kit and would not get the front springs again as they did not have the spring rate that I desired
                  3. front ridepro springs/pedders shocks with rear pedders shocks and springs = good for my wants and needs
                  4. as above with polyairs bags in the back = even better as it allowed me to retain a good day to day ride quality without being to harsh when unloaded yet load it up on the weekend or tow a relatively heavy trailer without bottoming out. All within GVM.
                  5. front ridepro springs/bilstein shocks (BE5-2450-M1 but not Darrens) with rear pedders shocks and springs and poly air bags = don't like the front end. it is underdamped IMHO

I'm about to go back to option 4 above (replacing front/rear shocks, keeping what is now 7 year old springs) as it's a known quantity and what i like the best out of the setups I have tried on the prado. I figure if it works for my wants and needs why not stick with it
