  • Waeco 50 litre + starting battery

    Tried the search without much luck so here it is:

    Just bought a 50l waeco fridge, and quick question is if i run the fridge whilst the car is on (engine running hence the battery is charging) will i not be discharging the battery even if the car is idling and all the lights are on/speaking on the UHF etc. I tried switching everything on (lights/fridge...etc) and on idle it was steady at 13.22V so seems OK to me?

    But what you have to remember is when you are not running the car what is it doing to your starting battery??? Then you just in and not starting? It will always be best to run an axu. battery if you can. That way too if you have to jump yourself off if the starter battery gives up the ghost you have a better chance of getting going without to much drama :shock:

      The alternator puts out about 80 amps. Your fridge will only add about 2.5 amps to the normal "load", and then not all the time. About the same with your UHF. So it's unlikely you're going exceed the ability of the alternator to run everything plus charge the batttery.

      Waeco fridges have an adjustable low voltage cut out. If you put it on the highest setting, you can run it directly from the main starting battery and it should disconnect itself well before the battery discharges beyond the ability to crank. To do this you will need to run some wires from the battery to the fridge, but will be a much better solution. You can then add a second battery at a later stage and use this same wiring. The second battery could be under the bonnet, or a portable sealed unit in the back.

        Just to clarify, the fridge will not be run on the main battery when the car is off. For now i have a portable generator but in the long run i will install an aux battery.

        Basically the question was, is it ok to run on the main battery whilst the car is running and using the stock ciggie lighter plug at the back. The fridge runs ok, voltage drop mustn't be too bad ?? however I'm aware that the stock wires are thin and need replacing.

          Yes it is OK. Just watch the cig lighter plug does not vibrate loose. Give it a good push in any time you are back in there.

            Just DON"T leave the fridge switched on overnight. - just putting emphasis on it no more

            Brother bought one of the little waeco as a bar fridge for recent trip up north (WA Kimberley) sure enough it consumed enough power to flat the auxiliary battery overnight

            When you install auxiliary battery upgrade the cables to over-spec to play save with voltage drop etc with any twin core wire just because you emasured up 6 metres, its actually considered to be 12 due to 2 wires being used.

              I must have scored a bonus with my rig, as I have been plugging my Waeco 80ltr into the rear aux socket for the last 12 months with the standard wiring and NEVER had an issue. I have only re-wired purely to make the socket live constantly. I have been running the 80ltr over night while camping with the accessories on and never a flat battery or fridge issues.

                Hi pjorek, running your fridge while idling the motor, even with thin wiring, should not pose a problem because the minimum voltage of 13.2v is still at least 0.5v above the best voltage you are likely to get of your battery when the motor is not running.

                As pointed out above, the fridge’s current consumption is minimal and with the way alternators are now set up to operate at idle speeds, you would be producing at least 30 amps at idle.

                You should have no problems running everything you have suggested, including your fridge, and cause no drain on your cranking battery, while idling your motor.

                  If you dont NEED a second battery for anything other than the fridge then you may consider purchasing the Waeco Raps 36 portable battery pack. We ran our CF60 off the 4wd when driving and then used the Raps to power it when the car is off. It also means you have total portability with the fridge for picnics or remote sites etc. We get about 30hrs out of it.

                  cheers

                      For charging the common way is to run leads from the main battery via a dual battery controller. These can be bought for around $140 -$200. Charge it up before you go off mains, then re-charge while driving.
                      Solar panels are also useful if you are going to sit in one place for a while. But this is getting costly.

                        I'm just interested how big this portable battery is? I've got a CF50 so is it half that size? Obviously the main issue with that solution is taking up the boot space as compared to 2nd battery which sits in the engine bay

                          Here ya go;

                          227mm x 230mm x 245mm. Mine fits easily inside my CF60 and takes up about 1/4 of the space.

                          I just plug mine into the 12v outlet. I have 6B&S cable that runs from the main battery to the rear of the vehicle and out to the CT. It drops in for a visit with a second 12v outlet at the rear.

                          No problema.

                          I think there are lots of horses for course. We take the fridge out of the prado when we get where we are going and plug it into the CT 12v so dont really need or want a second battery in the prado. We also have a small waeco coolpro that goes in the prado for day outings;
