  • Fuel Tank Indicator Light

    Hi, new to the forum.
However, I've found some helpful stuff prior to joining (more on that later*).

    I have a '95 Prado KZJ120, 3L Turbo, Auto, just under 115,000km.
This past weekend, the 90L sub-tank light stopped working (at least I hope that's what's wrong).
I thought my wife may have topped up the tank, but alas, she hadn't.
The gauge seems to working, though I'm suspect of its accuracy.
I'm hoping it's just a globe or sensor or something relatively minor.
I've read some stories here about sub-tank fuel pumps failing and vehicles stopping dead in there tracks. Very expensive and inconvenient ordeals.
Has anyone had this or a similar experience and recommend what steps I should take next?
Is there any way of assuring myself that the pump is functioning properly?
I have to travel this weekend (only 200k +/- round trip) but don't need any headaches like I've read about.
I won't be able to get it a mechanic or auto sparky 'til next week.

BTW I'm reasonably clever chap, but my level of motor mechanics went out with my '68 Valiant (like working on a lawn mower by comparison) any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mick

    * I recently experienced the gear lever spring dilemma. I was able to repair it and I am happy to share the details of how with anyone that needs it. It seems to be holding just fine and saved me $150 at the wreckers or $700 at Toyota!
I will put together a detailed description of the job and post in that old thread when I get a chance. Right now I'm just trying not to freak out about the current situation!

Is this for a 120 or a 90 series? The 120 series Diesel was the KZ120 for a while. This was released in 2003 but you have mentioned '95 and this is posted in the 120 section. Sorry but I'm a little confused.

Assuming you have a 120 with the interconnected tanks then just fill it up. If you can only put in less than 90l then the tank is reasonably full and the light would have had no reason to be on. If you can put in more than 90 (more like about 100)l then this is an indication that the light/sensor may have an issue.

The following is a link to the Toyo 120 model that you have suggested you have being the KZJ120 Auto:

And here are links to details of front and rear fuel tanks:

And for a break down of the dash in case the change of a light requires access:

Not sure if that will be of use but...

      Thanks for the links Schaffer.

Sorry, my bad. That was a typo. I put '95, meant to be '05 !! (it's a GL, btw)
That probably makes more sense to you now.
I'll check out the links and see how we go.

If there's anyone else that has had this experience, I'd like to hear about it.

      Thanks again.

        Re: Fuel Tank Indicator Light

Mick, the fuel is transferred continuously from the sub to the main tank by a boost-ejector pump. Essentially it's a venturi pump with no moving parts.

I suspect the problem might be in the light circuit or bulb itself.
