  • Hydraulic press to remove suspension bushing?

    Ok so I am preparing to DIY replace my lower control arm bushes and I'm told that I need to use a hydraulic press to remove/install them.

    Does anyone know if this type of press can do the job?

    What other tools would I need for the press?

    Thank you

    I've never done any Prado bushes (yet) but have done heaps of them on other cars and yes a hydraulic press is usually the best option if you have access to one.
    You will likely need to make up spacers to help you push the old bush out, press the new one in/support the control arms.

    That being said, there is always more than 1 way to skin a cat. I did all the control arm bushes on my HQ Monaro using an oxy to get em out (melt the rubber bush and then use hammer, chisel, punch to remove the metal shell). Just make sure there are no tree huggers around cos it will smoke like hell!
    Then used a high speed press and load distribution device (big hammer and a block of wood) to insert the new bushes.

    Not the ideal situation I know and if my old TAFE lecturers saw me doing it they would probably have a heart attack but it gets the job done no problems if done with plenty of care.

        There are a few other methods you can use if you don't have access to a workshop press.

        You can use a bench vise or even a G clamp as a press. You just need to find suitable mandrels to push the bush in/out, sockets and bits of pipe work well.

        Along the lines of this concept; you can also use All Thread as in the drawing and pic below;

        How it looks in the real world:

          Thanks for the info guys...

          I went to a suspension place to get a quote and they also told me that for Prados, the bolt that goes through the washer tends to fuse with the cam washer if the vehicle has been used in water crossings regularly. I then went to Toyota to get a quote for the bolt, cam washers and cam bolt and the total cost for 4 sides came up to $337! :shock:

          Hopefully the bolts in my vehicles will have no problems being taken apart otherwise I'll be in for more $$$.

          Thought of this as a DIY job but I think in the end I might just send it to the shop! :roll:
