  • Which fuel?

    Hi all,

Always used Safeway petrol and LPG in the 100 series, so now I've got the 150 thought I'd use their diesel. Did some research and couldn't find any adverse information apart from the usual unsubstantiated scaremongering about Safeway fuels in general. My question is, what is the best diesel to use? What is your preferred blend?

    Cheers

    Re: Which fuel?

i've used the woolies fuel with great results in previous diesels. from memory it is the same as the caltex stuff anyway.

you say safeway, so i presume you are in victoria. - i'd love to give BP Ultimate a go, but it's not available in NSW.

BP Ultimate all the way baby! Otherwise BP standard. Caltex vortex diesel is a waste of money IMO.

        Re: Which fuel?

        Thanks guys,

There's been minimal interest in this topic, which is a good thing. It means that overall there really is no difference between the available fuels. A few people have their personal favourites, but overall there are no horror stories.

I've done a fair bit of research into this, being my first diesel car. I've managed to come up with the following -

-Overall Australia has a poorer (but improving) quality of diesel fuel compared to other parts of the world.

-Cheaper fuels such as Safeway/Caltex have a higher sulphur content, which is environmentally bad.

-The 'Ultimate' branded fuels have a lower sulphur content, which can lead to engine damage in the right(wrong) circumstances.

-If you fill up from the servo nearest to you at the time you will end up with the best blend in your tank!

        Cheers

          Bumping this old thread....

I recently went on holidays, drove from Melbourne to Pambula which is around 600KM. the drive varies from flat 100km and 110km Freeway between Melbourne and Bairnsdale where it then changes to 100KM windy with hills for the second half of the trip.
I had a full car and a 4mtr boat stacked with camping gear including 7 bikes, as well as a roof pod on one side and a huge canvas tent and some chairs on the other.

I filled up with Caltex Vortex diesel and managed 12.5lph on the way up, maintaining the speed limit through the windy hills where possible, but I did allow it to slow down on the bigger hills for fuel economy and mechanical sympathy.

I then filled up again for the return trip but this time at the United in Pambula, on the return leg I drove similarly but only managed 13.6lph.
Once I got home I still had enough fuel for a week of city driving so I ran the tank down to empty. during this city driving I still got poor fuel economy compared to the Caltex I usually use.

One more afterthought, I used Diesel Power additive in the first tank but none in the second.

My conclusion is either the Caltex gives better economy than the United or the Diesel power improves economy.

Just on Fuel- it doesn't seem to matter which fuel I use or where I fill up, whether I'm towing bikes, jet ski or not towing I get the same milage - using the onboard computer thingy.

I used to use BP until the Alice store one day accidentally pumped unleaded out of their diesel pumps. Now use woollies stuff as you can't get ultimate diesel or vortex diesel here.
I find no matter what fuel I use my usage more depends on the weather more than anything else. I do some big miles and find at 6am (cool weather) I get about 2L better fuel economy @110kmh than I do at 3pm (hot weather).
I also found that a headwind of only 10-20kmh can increase fuel usage by 1-2L/100 and the opposite for a tail wind.
Interestingly I found that folding in the wing mirrors improves fuel by 0.2 L/100.
That's not saying that different brands of fuel play a role, but I don't think it's as big as people think

I do reset the trip and all the averages when I fill - old habit. But it's always pretty close to the same but then a JetSki or a bike trailer with a couple of bikes don't weigh much

Here in Perth I use BP Ultimate as I can get it up to 22 cents cheaper than Caltex Vortex.
Woolworths (Safeway) Caltex Vortex with 4 cents off still dearer plus BP give me 4 cents off with IGA docket.
United here cheap but standard diesel.
Travelling Australia I use whatever I can get but use Flashlube Diesel Conditioner each tank full.
Overall economy difference may be 1 ltr/100 but the slightest amount of crap in air filter can do that.
I don't buy from old rundown sites and prefer the ones used by large fleets, clean fuel clean air most important.
If you see the tanker filling the site come back at least an hour later to let fuel settle.

I use BP Ultimate all the time. Only reason is because I religiously used BP Petrol and LPG on the 80 series as thats what the LPG Conversion place told me to do. My mate has a 2015 D4D Hilux and he has always used Shell. He recently tried BP Ultimate for while and he reckons his runs smoother and gets better economy on Shell.

Hi All, I use to use BP ultimate or Caltex Vortex as I found I got better economy with them regardless of what I was doing 4WDriving or towing a boat or the camper.
Early last year I had an growth of some sort after filling up at various BP's in Melbourne for 6 or 7 fills, I put a calm in which they rejected so the repair bill was down to me so, I now avoid BP as much as I can on principle. Its probably still good and I just got a bad batch or something strange happened in the car. As I drive it every day and need to fill up every 2-3 weeks I don't believe the car environment had a lot to do with it.
                          Just my experience.

Diesel Bug (Bacteria Contamination of Diesel)
Diesel is an organic fuel so it provides an ideal environment for microscopic fungi, yeast and bacteria to feed and grow in the right conditions.
