  • New suspension: Terrain Tamer or Toyota OEM?

    Hi everyone,

I bought a second hand '99 SWB Prado (my first) the other day and need to change the suspension (stock springs and shocks with 170'000km), and would like to seek advice on the following issues:
    1) Are Terrain Tamer any better than the standard issue shocks and springs (my only two choices in Fiji - and at a similar price)?
    2) What about the bushings? should I also replace all of those? including stabilizer bar? with poly or standard bushings? Terrain Tamer, or Toyota OEM?
    3) Will putting heavy duty springs, a 50mm lift and poly bearings improve reliability or just transfer more stress to other components (like ball joints, wishbones and suspension attach points) and resulting in a less reliable car overall? (given the age of the car)

My main concern is reliability - the idea of a lift is only for aesthetic reasons (while I'm at it I might as well improve the clearance :-) ). I broke a front left lower ball joint over the weekend in the middle of nowhere and would rather go with solid, reliable mediocre performance than high performance and fragile.

    Many thanks for your thoughts,

    Roberto

Go the Terrain Tamer in a 2' lift if the cost is the same (which surprises me.... Toyota OEM stuff is $$$$$ for what it is)

If you have no extra weight (Bar, winch, roof rack, storage system etc) then go the mediums not the heavies for better ride qaulity (I know your roads are a bit average in Fiji)

Avoid using poly bushes on your sway bar, upper and lower control arms and panhard rod; factory rubber bushes ride and articulate much better.

Thanks MickL - do you have any experience with TerrainTamer (TT) bushings? The have non-poly bushes for front and rear lower control arm but only do poly bushes for the upper rear arm and panhard rod.. any idea why? (http://www.terraintamer.com/catalog/doc ... Series.pdf)

Based on your advice I will then go with the 40mm springs front and rear, gas front and expanded body gas rear shocks, OEM bushes all round (upper, lower control arms, front 'D', link rod, panhard rod and rear 'D').

It'll be a day or two before I can get to the store to order them - if anyone else has a different opinion feel free to speak out.

      Cheers

Terrain Tamer have a reasonable reputation in Australia. Good quality, price and an extensive range.

I prefer the factory bushings for the reasons already stated or at the least aftermarket rubber. Poly has it's place if you want outright handling (ie race/street racer) but generally on a 4wd you want ride quality and max articulation.

The reason that Terrain Tamer have a mixture is because they don't actually make anything - they source from many suppliers/manufacturers and add their brand name.
