  • Electomagnetic interference with DP Chip

    Hi All,
I've got a 150 Diesel GXL, DP Chip ARB bar IPF 900XS tow bar and ScanGuage II
I've posted a bit in the Chipping thread but thought this needed a topic of its own.
I've been running the DP Chip for about a month and "I think" its been responsible for the vehicle going into limp home 4 times (yep once a week!)

According to all the documentation from DP Chip i am advised to leave the settings (it has a 5 stage dial) left on the factory setting and up it if I change the engine spec... exhaust, intercooler etc.
When the ECU triggers the limp home "moment" and the horns from the surrounding traffic stop I restart and all is normal apart from the engine warning lamp. According to the Sanguage the trigger was P0083 which is related to fuel but thats all I have been able to find on the web.
I have spoken to Andrew at DP Chip and he seems to think it may be Electromagnetic Interference between the ECU and the chip and in turn the injectors..in my simple head that means its getting a trigger from the ECU to fire an injector and "static" from the fired injector (or rail) back to the chip again resulting in a change in rail pressure which triggers the limp home mode.
My question is has anyone else been running the DP Chip on the 150 and have you had any issues? (Yes its fitted as per the instructions in front of the battery behind the left headlight)
    Cheers
    Deasel

Have you tried disabling the DP Chip and run without it for a week or two to confirm it's actually the issue??

      Cheers MickL,
Yep I ran it for the first 5000 km's without chip and no issues. I have gone back to setting 4 on the chip and all seems fine so I'm hoping the Electromagnetic interference issue is not the problem and she was just advanced too far and was triggering the ECU. Could not be happier with the torque and response off idle though.

Much difference between the 4 setting and the 5?

Possibly a bit at the top end which helps for overtaking but to be honest its bugger all.

any one else got ant more information about DP Chip. I have had 2 fitted and removed as the limp mode activates in all levels after about 1 hour.

Deasel are you transmitting from a 2 way radio when this happens ?
                Cheers

                  Hi Ross,
No I haven't got one installed yet.
I ended up sending the Chip back and Andrew replaced it with a DP31M3....certainly no more issues but the "new" chip plugs directly into the injector (IE after the fuel pump and Rail) so I have written back to Berrima Diesel to explain how this chip could possibly be making changes to the timing, rail pressure and fuel volume (as it claims) if it sits after all these.

Power is good but if all its does is delay injector closing then I certainly shouldn't be paying $1500 for such a crude device...theres plenty other injector types at much less price.

Re: Electomagnetic interference with DP Chip

A mate who has a 150 fitted a Racechip but when fitted it would not start. He sent it back and they replaced it with one suitable for the 150 D4D motor (in fairness to Racechip the 150 was not specified when ordering). It certainly gave it more power but before it had travelled sufficient distance to check the fuel economy the chip failed. It was removed and returned with a request for a refund. Not sure how he got along.

                    Racechip claim a power increase from 127kw to 165kw (410 to 502NM).

Click on this link for the spec sheet.
                    http://www.racechip.de/racechip-chip...4D-3682-r.html

I have not fitted one but it does give my mates 150 a noticable increase in power.

                    Nifty

Update: They programmed it for a 120 but the injectors are different in the 150, program change fixed his problem but it failed after two weeks and he sent it back requesting a refund. Not sure if I am interested.

                    Nifty..

Re: Electomagnetic interference with DP Chip

When I was researching chips for my 120 D4D I heard a number of reports of DP chips causing the problems you describe (mainly in D4D hiluxes). I spoke with a number of diesel experts and the concensus amongst them was that the DP chip increases fuel rail pressure beyond the limit progrommed into the ECU hence the fault. The advice I got was to avoid chips that increase fuel rail pressure. This was a key reason I went with a Steinbauer chip, which I have had installed for 65,000km with any issues.
