  • Wiring For New Engel 40L

    Hi Everyone,

This is a late last minute post for some information regarding wiring for a Engel MT45G in a 2005 GXL Petrol Prado. Forgive if there are other similar posts out there. My wife and I are planning a trip from Adelaide up to Alice Springs and back leaving next week July 12th for two weeks and have purchased a new Engel MT 45 G to make the food storage a bit better instead of eskies and ice.

At the moment I have only just purchased the Prado and it is stock standard. I was planning for this trip anyway just to use the Engel on the rear cig lighter plug in the boot which would mean the fridge will only run when the ignition is on. I have no dual batteries setup but will look at this in the future. Also I will be getting a Icom UHF installed tomorrow.

    I guess my concerns are:

    1. Will the fridge run alright of the rear cig lighter (Some people say the fridge will cut out because it will draw to many amps or something?
    2. How will it go on the starter battery alone? One mate uses the same fridge in his Hilux directly wired with a single battery and hasn’t had a problem, but I am not confident.
    3. A auto electrician has quoted me $175 to run to 6mm wires to the battery for a direct connection? This seems expensive.
    4. How hard is it to run the wires and Engel plug to the battery myself?

    Any thoughts would be fantastic.

    Thanks,
    Nathan

Nathan, firstly congrats on your purchase.

My advice to you is this:

    1. You will almost certainly have dramas with the standard wiring to the cig lighter (i did in my 90series). The wiring is way too thin.
    2. You could run with a single battery provided you are smart about it. I have done it plenty of times. Trick is to start the car regularly and let it run if you are stopped for extended periods. Also when going to sleep at night, switch the fridge either off or to lowest setting. The fridges are very well insulated and will stay cold if the lid is closed. If you are really concerned and may be in remote areas take a new second battery (you will need it when the time comes for a dual set up anyway) and jumper leads (good ones) or the right tools to swap it out.
    3. $175 sounds about right for a sparky to do the job. There is a reasonable amount of work pulling panels off etc + the cost of the wires, terminals, fuses etc.
    4. No it is not a really hard job if you have a basic understanding of auto electrics. Things to consider are secure connections, proper insulation around sharp areas etc. You will have more problems pulling the plastic panels off in the cargo area I would expect (they can be bastards :x )

Hope this helps and happy travelling

For your rush trip, the fridge will be fine off the normal battery and cig plug in the rear.

I have run a 50 ltr Waeco like this for 2 weeks. If it isnt opened at night (after shutdown, it will hold a considerable temperature overnight).

On the last trip I did, I ended up plugging mine into a Projecta battery pack overnight, then charging the battery pack the next day.

Running the cables yourself isnt too hard, there is a couple threads exisitng showing how to do it.

        Hi,

I ran my Engel from the stock rear plug in the 120 until i got around to running the cables to the rear. it is not hard to do it yourself just takes a little time. If you are driving every day you wont have a problem running the fridge off the main battery.
