  • Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

    Hi Guys

Interested to hear if anyone else has expereinced an infrequent flatspot with their 150 TD. Mine seems to be dropping power for a second or so at around 55-60km when under load (e.g. up a slight hill) but not in any repeatable pattern. Not only is this annoying but at times dangerous.

I've done around 1800km in it now but this has been happening since new. This seems to be getting a lot more frequent (or at leat noticable) now though. At the 1000km service Toyota claimed they couldn't find any issues on the diagnostics so I took the service manager for a ride. Murhys law - no issue with him in the car. As normal, it started again as soon as I drove out of the dealership. Shes going back in this week for as long as it takes to fix. I really dont want it back the way it is - particularly for a $70k+ new vehicle that carries 2 young kids. A very dissapointing start to a new car experience - makes me wish I'd kept the old 80 Series TD - never missed a beat no matter how hard I tried to kill it!

Anyone else seen this issue or similar?

        Bursa,
Cars have "dealer detectors" built in so any hick ups will not show up at the dealers .

        Cheers

My d4d hasn't missed a beat and I've never noticed any flat spots in it either sorry. Mines a manual though if its worth anything.

***An update that may be of interest to all 150 series Automatic Turbo diesel owners***
I rang Toyota customer service and told them about this issues. They contacted the dealership I purchased the vehicle from and arranged for a series of tests to be carried out. After several days at the dealerership and a visit from the Toyota technicians,I have been told Toyota have apparently acknowledged the problem exists but have not been able to confirm a fix at this time, or even if a fix will be made available in the future. The indication I was given is that this is not an isolated problem. Toyota will be performing more tests on my vehicle next week..... so more posts to come...

BTW - they also fixed the 'vibrating dash' issue a number of others have also experienced, with some form of mod to the front right guard. Seems to have worked so far as I can tell...

                G'day Bursa,
I'm wondering if our trucks went down the line together. My rattle fixed aslo but do have the flat spot you talk about. I checked on the way home tonight for the paramaters you mention and they were pretty spot on - uphill, 2400rpm and a dead spot for a second or so. I noted the rpm dropped to arpound 1900 then recovered. I reckon I've seen a couple more posts about this in different forums. I'll bring it up at the 10K check. My primary goal of late was to kill the vibe!!

                Cheers

Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

                  Hi there Soz

Had a rep from Toyota out to my place this week to take the bus for a ride with the diagnostic gizmo attached. We managed to replicate the fault a number of times. From what I understand of it all, it appears that she is changing gear from 5th to 4th at that time. He mentioned something about the revs being similar due to the torque converter being locked up in one gear versus not in the other? (sorry for the lack of clarity - this is the first auto I have ever owned and it remains a bit of a mystery to me). It also seems to occasionally appear at around 40km/h and sometimes accelerating through a round-about or pulling out from a slip lane.

The Toyota guy took all the data with him and told me he would be sending it to Japan for analysis. I'm not sure what the outcome will be, but hopoefully we will see an update for the ECU at some stage that makes the gear change earlier / smoother / better. No promises from the Toyota guy though. I'm still not satisfied with the outcome to date but hey, what do you do?

All I can suggest is that anyone else experiencing the problem contacts the Toyota Customer Experience Centre (1800 252 097) and registers thier experience.

Sorry I don't have better news.

Re: Flat Spot at around 2400 RPM

Same issue on my March 2010 build GXL auto, I rang Toyota customer care and they stated that they were unaware of the problem (same answer for the 1500RPM vibration issue I have as well). Spoke to local daelership and they are unaware of both issues as well. I know another owner who has this flat spot problem and he was told that it is "normal" for this model by his dealer.

I have also noticed a similar "flat spot" with my SX a few times. I haven't really been paying a great deal of attention to the gear, revs or speed at the time. I will try and be a bit more observant next time.

                        Hi Fellas,
I have a 9 week old D4D and have all the problem listed in the previous posts - flat spot - rattling vibrating dash - weird vibrations etc.

I haven't had a chance to get it in for the first check up, but there doesn't seem to be any fix for these issues anyway.

I will keep you posted on the outcome.

Bit of a bummer really, as i loved my 2004 model

                        Cheers

Had my 150 D4D in for a service today and mentioned that I am suffering from this and it would appear that Toyota now know about this issue. Have your dealer submit a DPR to log your VIN so that you will be notified when a fix is available. No time frame has been offered for a solution but at least it is now recognised by Toyota.

Well done to those who have been able to demonstrate this and have it esculated by their dealer.

Hi Bursa, have you had the latest ECU upgrade for the transmission installed. It came out a couple of months ago. It was the solution to the transmission over heat light coming on. I have had this installed in my Sep 10 model 150 series and there is no flat spot at 2400RPM's.

Deasal also refers to it in a post and called in "flashing" the auto. He writes a pretty good description of the improvements it has made. I didn't drive one prior to the upgrade, so cant comment on what the change is like.

                              Regards Adam
