  • Does fitting 2 way radio conflict with Toyota Manual

Hi there all drivers, recently purchased 04 gxl 120 prado. Noted in the manual about the non instalation of Two way radios for a variety of said reasons by Toyota. Can someone tell me the facts please, yes or no or boycott some models ? thanks.
I have read all i can find on indepenent- dependent, roof- bar, dBs,Amps etc.
Sorry if this has been covered.

I see that as a general CYA (Cover Your Arse) statement in case something goes wrong. It is in the manual because they know a lot of 4wd vehicles have 2 way radios fitted. As far as I know there is no problem with any brand name modern 2 way radio being fitted.

      Agreed, CYA statement.
There were some reports of two way radios affecting the ECUs in a mine in Qld or WA. These would have been higher powered commercial band sets and I suspect poorly installed.
Technically, it is possible. RF radiation could and does interfere with electronics. ( that's why they ask you to turn phones off in planes )
I have witnessed a hand held portable 2 way radio operated inside a vehicle cause issues( not a Prado ). This would be due to the high radiation point ( the antenna ) being near the electronics in the dash.
But unless you're to have the antenna mounted inside the cab ( which wouldn't make sense ) I can't see an issue.
There's hundreds of Prados out there with two way radios in them ( including Govt vehicles, Police, Forestry etc ) and not suffered any problems.
The UHF CB sets are only 5 Watts transmit power, commercial set are 25 Watts.
      Cheers, Wayne

          Hi Oldsmobile403
Just be careful what circuit you connect into and where you run cables. Not saying it will happen but it could happen like this:
          http://www.lcool.org/forum/viewtopic...ghlight=airbag

Seems someone wired in their CB with not so good results.

Guys and girls. You will never believe what I just saw happen.

Me and the wife ducked over to Canberra for a bite to eat and a look at the shops. We were coming home via Lanyon Drive (major route in Canberra) and just happen to be following a Graphite Sahara TTD with Victorian rego.

We were just chatting and admiring how the LC200 in front of ours stood out in traffic, thinking ours would look the same.

All of a sudden, the Sahara hit the skids and pulled to the left. I hit the brakes as well and steered around the Sahara. As I passed it, I looked to the left thinking 'whats this dimw1t doing' when I noticed the cabin of the Sahara was filled with smoke. I thought this was weird, so I pulled up in front of the Sahara, hopped out and approched it. I couldnt believe what I found.

ALL of the airbags had deployed. Every single one. 10 of the bloody things.

After calling the ambo's (cause the driver and his wife were shaken up a tad) I asked what happened.

He said he had just fitted (himself) a new CB radio (at his brothers place) and went for a test drive to see how good it was. He said he pushed the transmit button and all hell broke loose.

All I can think of is he may of connected a wire where it shouldnt have been connected, or it was a fault in the car which has deployed the airbags.

Through my work I have seen many airbag deployments at accident scenes and I have a ok knowledge of how / what sets them off.

What do you guys think may have happened?????

I do have to admit tho, its going to be a real ba5tard to fix all the damage inside the car.
Also the RF power has a effect. Large high powered commercial type HF radios can affect the ECU on modern vehicles, was reports of engines cutting out or missfiring when the transmit button is pressed, Toyota apparently are particularily prone to this.

Re: Does fitting 2 way radio conflict with Toyota Manual

Let's see, I have digital radio (UHF), Codan HF, CB (dual band am/fm), GPS locator (so the bosses can track the car), in-car 3G DATA info system, GPS unit, and mobile phone all installed into late 09 Prado.

Surely if there was an issue our fleet managers (government) would know about it.

And Toyota have never commented about the fitouts, ever.

Re: Does fitting 2 way radio conflict with Toyota Manual

I have a 2m amateur radio under the drivers seat and an hf unit in the rear. Have used both while driving and never had a problem.

The problem with the 200 series sounds like installer error.

Re: Does fitting 2 way radio conflict with Toyota Manual

I have a Barrett HF set, and an amateur VHF/UHF and a UHF CB and have had no issues.
All have been installed using good RF practices.

I think you'll find in the airbag case mentioned they have most likely connected the CB
somehow to the airbag wiring by mistake.,

Plenty of emergency services and the police also have radio gear installed.

                Cheers

                  RF issue

Well I've just had my first RF / electronics interference issue.

Have had radios of all types - going back to 27MHz SSB Cb's in the late 70's (some with linear amps up to 300W!) , HF Barrett and Codan for RFDS, and UHF in recent years. All with no hint of any problem in any vehicle.

This last week the Garmin 1490T in our Hilux Surf kept shutting down when ever the UHF was transmitting. The radio is an Icom IC-400Pro, running 40 Ch UHF at 5W and also 2 private commercial channels in the 464 MHz band at 25W. The GPS shutdown happened on both 5W and also 25W channels. After TX was stopped the GPS would reboot and start ok.
Another Garmin GPS - a 60CSx was not affected. On one occasion the 1490T shut down completely and couldn't be restarted for about 3 hours.

Then it all came good. Very strange. Could TX without influencing the GPS - or I thought so. It seems the Bluetooth receiver in the 1490T had been overwhelmed by the RF from the UHF. The GPS is mounted next to the drivers 'A' pillar and the unity gain UHF antena is on a 'Z' bracket on the drivers side fender. About 400mm apart.

The UHF has killed the bluetooth function in the GPS.

The GPS has been returned to Garmin for warranty repair/replacement.

Looks like the UHF antena will have to be moved futher / higher away - thinking maybe to the top of the snorkel. May even perform better up there.

                  Tuco
