  • black soot coming out exhaust

    Hi Guys

    After some information here, I have noticed recently that I am getting black patches on my driveway /garage floor.
    It is definitely coming out he exhaust and I notice it more when the car is under load IE reversing up the driveway or pulling a trailer up the driveway. In saying that it does do it at other times as well. I have checked it and it almost looks like soot, it doesnt seem to be a wet substance.

    Is it something to be concerned about?
    Any ideas how I can stop it?

    Cheers

    Andrew

    Black soot from Diesel = too much fuel?

      Hi Andrew,

      I would hazard to guess its the colder weather and high humidity.

      Cause the engine is cold the condensation is dripping out of the exhaust which mixed with the black soot (which is in all diesel exhaust), is making the mess.

      Does it more under load cause there would be more exhaust gasses coming out.

      See if it does it when the engine is hot....after a drive (don't idle it to get warm).

      Nothing to be worried about I reckon, all my diesels in the past have done it.

      Cheers,

        Thanks mate

        I'll keep an eye on it. Come to think of it I have only noticed it when at startup.

            Experiencing the exact same symptom with my rig. Spoke with Toyota about it who couldn't really give me a firm answer. Probable causes they have given me:
            * dirty fuel,
            * dirty/sticky turbo wastegate,
            * build up of gunk in the engine manifold.

            I notice it whilst the engine is under load or at high rev's. Usually notice it at night with someone behind your with their lights turned on.

            Note that it isn't a bad plume of smoke, very minor but still noticeable.

              Sounds like a little over fueling, and if it's only minor smoke and your really giving it some stick when it happens; then it's probably quite normal.

              If it's under more sedate driving conditions, especially if it never did it before under the same conditions then maybe something else.

              First step is looking at the simple things like the condition of the air filter and making sure your pre spinner dosen't have anything blocking it (ie;bugs).

              Might also want to remind your Toyota dealer that your D4D doesn't have a wastegate (being a variable vane turbo).
