  • 12v - 5v USB Power Socket

Thought I would give this a go as an experiment. I've been keen to fit some power outlets in the middle row to keep the kids happy and to maintain mine and the Other Half's sanity while travelling on long trips. Seems that there are a lot of devices that require a conventional cigatte style outlet but more and more seem to utilise a USB outlet. I had looked around for a plug in unit that I could permenantly mount in the vehicle that supported both outlets. I did pick one up reasonably cheap BUT it wasn't quitre what I was after. Went for a walk at lunch the other day and found Aztronics not far from work.
While having a look I found they had the Baintech style 12v outlest at a very good price when compared to ARB who sell them indevidually for twice the price:

I was also very pleased to find a USB socket on a lead that would be suitable to mount on something other than a circuit board.

So I have descided on an experiment to build a simple circuit to power the USB socket from the existing 12v. USB sockets rely on 5v so I purchased a simple 5V Regulator that will accept anywhere between 7v and 35v to push out a constant 5v with a maximum current rating of 1A.

That parts were very cheap so if this fails I'm not too fussed. The USB socket lead was about $2.50 and the regulator was less than $2.00. Tomorrow I will solder this up and try and power this from an old 12v plug and see how it's looking. If the multimeter is reading correctly then I might connect up my daughters MP3 player and see if it charges it. If that is successful then into the car with it altough I will possibly also look at some sort of lighting option. If all successful then I intend on mounting this on the back of the centre console somewhat like Matty and Loz.

    Re: 12v - 5v USB Power Socket

Looks like a good mod. I run PDAs, MP3s & phone charges off USB ports. So I went & bought a ciggy extension socket which contains 2 ciggy sockets & 2 USB ports. There are a few on ebay & I have seen them in Repco & Supercheap Auto. Quite expensive @ 20 bucks.

Still expermental at the moment. Will build this up a bit later today but it may require a filter across the socket in the form of a capacitor and a couple of resistors.

        Your design should work OK.

Maybe not what you're looking for, but why not just get one of these ? :

Becayse I don't want that. I already have a number of cigarette style USB plus but I want a dedicated socket.

I just brought a Narva power cup, fits in a cup holder has 2 metres of power cable that plugs into cig lighter socket and on the cup you 2 cig size sockets and 2 USB sockets.

Hi Schaffer, I think you will find that you may need a heatsink for the regulator. I'm not sure what sort of current your USB devices will draw but at a maximum of 1A multiply by 8 Volts (13 minus 5) you will find that 8 watts is probably going to cook it. Also from experience, I would advise you to add little 100nF caps between the input and ground and output and ground just to prevent any occilations in the voltage, that may show up as noise in the USB device.

No worries there Boomslang. I had a piece of Aluminium bar which I had the regulator bolted to assist in heat dissapation. I also mentioned further up about using a capacitor but would probably be more adviseable to use two. I soldered what I had together yesterday afternoon and tested with a multimeter and the 5v was closer to 6v. Used my daughters MP3 player and plugged in and instead of charging it fireed it ready for use but then shut down after about 30secs. Will get a few capacitors and trial later in the week.

The end result is I DO NOT WANT a plug in USB device. I do not want wires hanging around all over the place when I can build something reliable that is console mounted and available to the kids when they want it.

I will stay tuned for the end result. You may find that the 6V are as a result of the noise I was refering to. I learn't the hard way. 100nF decoupling caps are essential.

I wonder if you could pull the "guts" out of one of the adpators you already have and dash mount that somehow ?

I have considered that. I will keep trying with what I'm doing for the moment but if I end with a catastrophic failure then it is the backup plan.

                          Good luck with the experiment.

Small tip do the smoke test on the benchtop instead of in the vehicle

If you do smoke it at least its just those parts and nothing more serious involving the whole electrical system

                          Cheers

Be interesting to see what you come up with there Schaffer. Worth a look into...

I considered something similar before settling on the 12v sockets, there are resons for and aganst both methods. Resons why I went with the 12v sockets as apposed to custom USB sockets is that most small pieces of electical equipment have car charging accessories that can be purchased for them these days, also that USB sockets aren't structually very strong, certainly not compared with a standard 12v socket. A little too much force in the wrong direction (ie kids tripping on a plugged in cord while climbing in out out of the middle row) can cause the USB socket to break and potentially short out. Whereas the 12v sockets will take more force - realistically I'd expect the lead to break before the socket does.

Still the idea is sound, might be worth reproducing what you come up with myself!

Had a prototype running but found the voltage wasn't spot on 5v. I assume this is a little noise so a few capacitors either side is required to filter this out. Problem there is I've been busy with a few trips and other things and havn't had a chance to follow this through as yet. In a few weeks time I might be able to get back to it.
