  • Redarc override switch question

    Howdy,

A mate was telling me that the override switch to connect the batteries must be his by someone else, as the time given from the switch and turning the engine is to quick for a driver to do it and then run and turn the ignition. Is this correct? Am not sure, but would think no, because redarc seems to be the choice for most here,

    Thanks

    Nick

    Re: Redarc override switch question

    Nick,

Forgive me if I have misunderstood your question.

I am presuming you think (or your mate has told you) the override switch is mounted under the bonnet with the Redarc isolator. This is not quite correct.
The correct install is to run a wire through to the dash and fit a push button (momentary) switch. This should be fitted within the drivers reach. Then it is simply a matter of holding the button in with your left hand and using your right hand to crank/start the engine. Once started release the button and you're away.

    Hope this clears it up.

    Chriso.

      Re: Redarc override switch question

      That has answered my question.

I did recall seeing that in the installation instructions, but he was adamant that the switch was on the isolator and you needed two to do the override.

Is Redarc still the isolator of choicer?

The other thing he suggested was to mount the second battery close to the primary, not in the spot designed for it (left hand side looking at the engine). Apparently this will reduce the strain on the alternator in charging the aux battery. Will it make THAT much of a difference?

Sorry about this.... just read HEAPS on here over the past few years and what I have heard on the weekend goes against the grain.

      Thanks

      Nick

I hope your "mate" has some other qualities, because electrical knowledge is not one of them.

Ha Ha Ha took the words right out of my mouth!

Mount the battery where it is designed to go and yeah use the Redarc they are a well designed, cost effective unit. They will not however, take the place of a human brain. If you run the fridge off the aux battery and then run your stereo all nighht long you will simply have TWO flat batteries instead of 1. Be smart in the way you wire things up and you will be fine.
