  • 1KZ-TE starter motor and alternator life

    Hi all,

    My 06 1KZ t/d has just covered 150,00kms (probably 1/3 maybe 1/2 in the bush). No extended really wet bush travelling (hate getting bogged!) but several very deep water crossings.

    We are looking at a couple of very remote area trips and I was just wondering what sort of life PPers have had with high kms starter motors and alternators.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    Mine have done 180 000km with no problems whatsoever. Alternator is still putting out 14.1 V and the starter hasn't missed a beat. In my experience, a bad starter will rarely just stop working suddenly. There is usually some kind of warning before complete failure in most cases. If you have a multimeter, you can check the output of your alternator. If it's below spec or you have been experiencing frequent flat batteries for no apparent reason it may be time to replace it. Otherwise leave it alone and relax...it's a Toyota.

      Hi Mike. All of my Toyotas starters gave a hint that grief was coming by issuing a few false starts 1st - the common "clack-clack-clack" before finally engaging. Is usually the contacts which eventually arc away (for whatever reason, one always goes before the other). Are easy to fit and cheap (if you dont buy the expensive kit from Toyota). Auto electricians will sell you the 2 bare contacts which is all you need. The only trouble I ever had with Toyota alternators was when they had the vacumn pump on the back which would leak oil through the seal onto the slip rings which would then make the warning lamps on the dashboard do weird stuff. Unless they are over 200,000 km or more only shit and water will kill them. Cheers, Derb.

        The worst you can do to a 1kzte starter is to poor oil on it when doing your oil filter changes....There is a drain pipe but it can become blocked.

        The alternator can easily be filed with muddy water & fail a short distance later (100m - 20km)

        With a failed alternator you should get 150-200+ km before you have injector/auto gearbox issues....just turn off everything else you can first to extend the battery life...

          What sort of repairs to the alternator are people having when it fails from mud or water? The two times its happened to me the alternator/battery warning light came on once the carbon brushes stopped making contact with the slip ring due to being jammed up. Its then been as simple as removing the regulator, cleaning up the where the carbon brushes spring in and out with some spray and putting it back together.

          Have I just been lucky or is this the normal sort of repair??

            Hi VL400. Na - you are right. They are pretty bulletproof. As long as you have a good brush contact onto the slipring and good bearings, very little else gives grief. Cheers, Derb.

              I had to have ny starter done not long ago (about 192,000). My service guy is an ex toyota mechanic and he reckons they made the solenoid points too small. Had a reco one put in and they upgraded the size of the solenoid points as they knew it was a problem. Didn't charge me any extra for it so had no reason to do doubt what they said. Alternator seems to be doing fine although I'm not putting any huge load accessories onto it either.

                  Yes I had the alternator refurbed after that little incident :shock:

                  Probably could do it myself, but time was of the essence.

                  It would be handy to actually go through the process of removing the alternator & stripping it down in town before needing to in the bush. Also avoiding mud puddles at speed & after others have stirred it up & also not having all the inner guards attached would also help.
