  • Winch isolator

    G'day all,
I'm very close to installing my winch on my 120. I'm currently in the process of wiring up the control box, which will be located under the bonnet. I've replaced all the cables to fit, but would like to install a battery isolator, to kill all power when not in use. What type of isolator switches are commomly used, and what rating would be best? Also, should the winch be fuse protected?
For the moment, the winch will wired to the oridginal battery, untill I can decide where to mount a second one.
    Regards,
    Barry

    Re: Winch isolator

    Barry,

Take a look at some examples on the Narva website. I have used several of these before for various purposes and always found them reliable and coste effective. They should alll detail amperage ratings etc. Your winch specs will help you with what ratings you need.

        Guys
looking for some input on fitting a winch isolator.

Wanting to ensure that the isolator I choose will handle the Amps sucked up by the Winch.

        Some winch information;

        "PERFORMANCE OF 1ST LAYER".
        Line Pull = 9500lbs.
Line Speed = 7.9 feet per minute.
        Motor Amp Draw = 350amp.

With that in mind I'm considering the following from Jaycar.....

I bought this one from Jaycars the other day but the terminals were way too big for the lugs that were fitted to the cable for my winch. I didn't want to have to change lugs so I just bought the other model that they also have done there. It's rated at 500amps (momentary amt I think). The terminals on this were also slightly too big but I was able to redrill the holes to enable me to use the current lugs on the leads provided..... Time will tell if its up to the task though

Personally at such high Amps, I'd be buying a name brand device rather than a no-name device.

This is the one I was looking at from Jaycar $49.95

As rob_macca67 stated the studs are quit large, 10mm. Narva terminal lug 57130 will suit that stud and the 25mm power cable supplied with my winch.

Thanks everyone for you thoughts, quit a few good options there, will come down to where I can mount them to make the final call.
                      Cheers

Keep us posted with your results as I'm keen to see what others do in this area....

One thing I forgot to mention regarding that one with the large terminal.... U can't remove the handle from the switch which probably won't matter if u mount it under the bonnet, but thought I'd just put it out there....

To prevent any unwanted use of the winch I ran the earth through a $4 rocket launcher switch that hides high in the engine bay. When heading offroad I flick the switch and it's ready to go.

I've got a similar thing only on the switch panel on the dash which also provides power to my front CAM which I have mounted on the front of the winch control box on the bar. I've heard stories of scum unspooling winches across the roof of 4wds and attaching to tow bars and then placing a short in the control box plugs resulting in the 4wds turret being sliced in half!!! A simple switch to isolate this from happening is cheap insurance...

I would have liked to run the switch into the cabin but SWMBO drew the line at "another button" to go with the 8 or so there already. Didn't help that I mentioned rocket launcher!
