Although there was brief mention in the forum about this topic, I would like your opinion on whether one should have the Prado's oil changed at the first (free) service a month after owning the vehicle. The dealer says that they don't normally change the oil then - and was somewhat surprised about my question. Your views are appreciated.

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
Although totally impractical and obviously not an option, but a diesel mechanic friend of mine once told me "If you could change the oil in your diesel every day that would be the best for your engine". Clearly no one will do that, but despite the extra cost, Im a bit old school and believe that whilst it is not required by the manufacturer, it can only do good to change the oil at 1000km. I know the argument of laser cut engine blocks/already run in/finer tolerances etc that most of the metal fragments will either not be there of have collected on the metallic drain plug, but its certainly not going to do any harm...

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
Whilst the factory manual doesn't specify it, I am still a bit "old school" about new engines - I had my engine oil and filter replaced at the 1000 km mark on the odometer, which I had to pay for, as it was not covered under the Toyota Service Advantage program. I didn't mind paying for it, because I had adopted the "drive it like you stole it" method of breaking in the engine, once the coolant temperatures had reached their normal operating range.
Vehicle specifically is a '09 200 Series Cruiser, but if I were driving a new 150 Series D4D, I would have done exactly the same thing.

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
Just a thought on this topic that may open a can of worms
Have you considered that engines should not have oil changed after 1k due to running oils used at the factory.
Changing the oil too early may reduce the running in
Although engines are said to be run in at factory this is impossible on a mass produced engine.
If Toyota thought the engine oil eeded changing they would recommend doing so.

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
From experience I recommend changing the oil in any engine after the first 1000 odd kms. Building engines almost always means tiny amounts of silcone (dirt) and metal swarf ends up in the sump and the oil galleries. Pay the money, drop the oil and change the filter.
Very cheap long term insurance.

The car is delivered with the same oil in it that you get when it is serviced - there is no 'running in' oil. If there was, Toyota would have to tell you NOT to change the oil at the first service as you will be getting rid of the 'running in' oil.
Cheers
I also believe in changing the oil early first time, but found some reports (mainly on US web forums) about high levels of molybdenum disulphide in the original Toyota factory oil. This supports the theory of a break in oil from the factory.
It's cheap and easy to get an oil analysis in the US whereas almost unheard of here for passenger vehicles.

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
This got me thinking of when I was an apprentice..
I used to build Holden engines, drop them into the engine bay, smash my rig up the road, drop a huge full RPM burnout (country roads..) and then flog it home.. change the oil and it was 'run' in

Re: Oil change (or not) at first service
I did an oil and filter change after contemplating it for a while. The mileage was only at 500km when it was done because a lot of pro engine builders state a lot of contamination is from the original machining and the initial ring to cylinder break in. At first I thought it is a waste of money, but after the oil change and physically seeing what came out, I accepted that it was money well spent. I will encourage all to have the oil changed at the latest on the 1000km mark!
