    I need advice please on a problem Prado:
    The patient : 2006 TDI , Auto, 81K, well looked after.
    The Problem: When the vehicle is in Park I cannot start the engine. The key gets to the point past the Accessory position ready to the firing point and that is as far as I can turn the key. I put the car in Neutral and all is fine and the engine is able to be started as normal. This does not happen all the time and has only appeared in the last couple of days. I have had the car since new and this is the first hint of trouble.
    I intend to take it to a mechanic but would be nice to be able to stear him in the right direction and not be charged hours of "Looking Time". Your collective ideas would be appreciated. Nobby

    Take a look at your key...it might have over time started to wear. In and Out and in and out does wear on the key and pins and you afre looking at what 6 years or so of wear. If you have the other key for it try this as it might be the one that is not used the most.

      Thanks Karratha, I have done some homework and have contacted my local Toyota dealer and he reckons it is the Neutral Start Switch. It (hopefully) is on the side of the Gear Box and at best just needs the terminals cleaned ($40), at worst the gear box pulled out ($2500)(if the switch is in the Gear Box - highly unlikely)). The vehicle however will always start in neutral. Gave me a bit of a fright but looks like will not leave me stranded on the beach at low tide as long as we can still start it. Anyhow will be going in on Monday to see what how to fix the problem (not with the dealer but with a Automatic Mechanic). Thanks for the reply. Nobby

        For those interested , my problem has been fixed. As stated by Karratha I should have looked at the ignition. It turned out to be a staple in the key hole. Result - pulled apart and extracted- Bill $160. Better than $2500 from the dealer.

            I bet it was in the pocket or something like that and got caught on the end of the key and was inserted or the rug rats did it ops: Glad you got it sorted

              Like you, I asked the question. No idea how it got there unless the keys have a small amount of magnetisium in them that picked up the staple somewhere. Definately no kids involved. Anyhow the main thing is that if anyone else unfortunately has this problem you will know where to look first.
