Gday guys,I am in a bit of trouble ops: .I was towing my caravan around a sweeping corner up a slight hill on sunday and my D4D lurched and went into some form of limp mode. .I pulled over and checked my prado and there was no smoke, and it was idling smoothly. It just didnt rev and engine light came on.I turned it off and then turned it on again and light was still on but it would rev and tow caravan just as well as ever.I towed van another 20k home and took it to toyota to find out the problem. My prado has the D4D engine with 5 speed auto and to aid towing arond australia next year i have had a STEINBAUER chip and BEAUDESERT exhaust fitted.Toyota put my AUG 07 D4D on the computer and the fault code pulled up was some "Stepper motor on the TURBO".They removed the fault code and cant get it to do it again.I have been told to try and get it to do it again by towing the caravan but i am concerned about being caught beside the road. They have implied that they may assist me with a new turbo if required but i have only 3 months to get it to happen again and i am then out of warranty. They also pointed out my modifications and said it may affect my warranty claim.Do you guys have any ideas on what i can do as i really dont want to by a genuine exhaust if that is not really the reason for the light coming on?Is there anyone else with these mods that has had this light come on with loss of power? Regards Keithy.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
The exhaust should not be an issue as it was a replacement for the original that burnt a hole in it  .Tasmania 2015 GTG Committee Member 2005 Prado Pilbara, Sovereign Bar, Driver & passenger weathershields, UHF TX3220, Spare wheel spaces, Lifestyle rack, Genuine front & midrow seatcovers, Genuine front & midrow rubber floor mats, ARB 47 litre fridge/freezer, Hilux washer jets, BF Goodridge A/T, Radiator protection plate, Dual battery tray and isolator, ARB 2.5m awning, Rhino heavy duty areo bars, MSA rear wheel bin, MAXTRAX

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Others on PP have had issues with the varible vane turbo and "Stepper Motor" faults. Try a search as it was a while ago and I forget who it was.
Neither of your mods are very likely to cause a stepper motor fault. The stepper motor controls boost by changing the angle of vanes inside the turbo (as opposed to a traditional pneumatic wastegate control found on earlier motors; ie the 1kz). Your fault is either mechanical (sticking/jamming) or electical/control of the stepper motor.
Your exhaust obviously has nothing to do with it as it's downstream of the Turbo and your chip only alters fuel and timing, not boost. The only possibility is the chip is causing a random fault to be read inside the ECU, although I suggest this would be very unlikely.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Thanks for your thought MickL. We were hoping that you may have read this thread, as we have watched you help others with gremlins. I am going to put our caravan back on again over the weekend, trailling hills with and with out chip to see if we can get it to do it again. We have done 5,000km with the chip on, with no previous problems.Toyota have advised me that costs may be up to $4000.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
I'm not sure how the chip works but if it adjusts boost pressures, the error code might have been from the stepper motor being instructed to move to increase boost but the vane adjustment being maxed out.
Stepper motors generally have a position sensor. Most modern controllers issue a move command and wait for feedback from the position sensor to change within a certain time to confirm the position change has happened.2019 GXL, Bullbar, UHF, Redarc Brake Controller, Tow Bar, Secondary Fuel Filter

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
The Steinbauer Chip simply intercepts and modifies the signal to the injector. It does not effect the fuel rail pressure or boost. It is hard to imagine how this could effect the turbo stepper motor. Toyota blaming it on the exhaust is just BS.
The turbo has its own seperate controller. I have got this same fault once when I forget to reconnect the controller after having the dash apart. I just reset the fault from my ScangaugeII.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Thankyou fellow pradopointers for your prompt feedback. My wife has stopped slapping me on the back of my head for ruining our prado if it isnt truly related to our mods .Can you explain how your scanguage11 erased the fault code on the instrument cluster please leachy-9?This may be a remedy if it only happens once a year if toyota wont come to the party or i cant get it to happen again in the next 3 months whilst under remaining warranty.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Keithy,
The ScangaugeII plugs into your OBDII port and provides engine data directly from the ECU, in day to day driving it is used to provide fuel usage, water temp and similar data. It also has a function that will display any fault codes present in the ECU and gives you the option to reset the faults.
Note that it only displays the faults as a code, you then need to look up what the code means. A google search will quickly give you a list of OBDII fault codes.

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
I am very interested in this topic as I would like to replace by exhaust system on my D4D in order to get more torque as I tow a very heavy caravan. Looking at the error codes associated with the variable nozzle vane of the turbo, it is apparent that an error is generated when the vane actuator is not positioned correctly in less than 0.5 seconds. This measurement does not appear to have anything to do directly with the velocity of the exhaust gases.
With a much larger diameter exhaust pipe, the pressure of the exhaust gases and hence velocity should decrease. This is going to reduce the amount of turbo boost so that the turbo motor driver is going to attempt to compensate by changing the angle of the nozzle vane. I am wondering if under load conditions there is a mismatch between the actual vane position and where the motor driver thinks it should be. Does either the vane actuator or the turbo driver motor run out of puff and is this somehow affected by the reduced exhaust gas velocity?
Just thinking aloud and wonder if one of the trained Toyota technicians can elaborate on the safety and effect of fitting a Beaudesert or Taipan exhaust system?

Fitting a larger/upgraded exhaust will not cause a stepper motor fault. It can only be from an electrical fault (for example short or open circuit in the wiring) or mechanically (for example sticking vanes, mechanical breakage)

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Just found this forum as I have the same issue with my 2007 hiace.
I know the turbo size is smaller than a prado but same engine.
My van is dead stock.
All power died on way up a hill with check engine light on.
No boost, couldn't hear turbo at all.
Got towed to my mechanic just in case toyota complain about warranty and driving with light on.
Code was the stepper motor.
After getting it off the tow truck, it came good!
Could hear it boosting again and power back.
Didn't touch anything.
So just in case Toyota tell you guys that a mod like an exhaust is to blame, it's not.
Mine is dead stock and had the P1251 code.
Just what I need on the way to a job....

Re: Toyota is not happy with my exhaust
Just got van looked at today.
For your info- stepper motor issue is a known fault with Toyota.
Service guys knew all about it.
If it happens again they will replace my turbo even out of warranty as I have brought it to their attention before the warranty expired.
