Hi just wondering if anyone has had excess black smoke when taking off from stand still , I have now got this problem since i put diesel in as it was running fine before this , does the egr on this engine suffer as mine has an electrical plug on it and i thought if it was i would have noticed it being a bit smokey and gradually getting worse if this was the case , the smoke is before turbo kicks in and it feels a bit under power and does not blow black smoke everytime . plz help thanks

No. Blocking off the EGR is good for you engine...... just that it's not good for the enviroment
Blocking the EGR is a very common mod as it stops the carbon build up that can choke intake systems.

Mick,
I read this some time ago http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/424 ... g_EGR.aspx which turned me off blocking the EGR. What's your take on this? I trust the advice you have given over the years on this forum, so would like your opinion.Black 2003, TD, GXL Prado

ok thanks Mick , have you blocked off your egr , does it cause higher temps in motor or any other changes thanks
I also run a Dtronic and boost controller set to 1 bar (14.7 psi)

These problems are not present on the 2.8 or 4.2 Nissan engines.
Blocking the EGR presents no problems on the 1kz and as I said; is very common amoungst not only Prado, but Hilux and Surf owners.
Maybe the only advive I could give is those with common rail engines (D4D owners) need to use some caution and fit a pyro and boost gauge before attempting this mod (and really this is best practice with any turbo diesel engine before any sort of engine modification, including the 1kz. Personaly I wouldn't do any performance mod without EGT and boost base line data)

Mick did you have any pics of the intake of your engine and is it much cleaner than one with egr still connected
A Google search will find you plenty of pics. Or check out the Patrol forum, lot's of pics of Patrols in bits and a lot of dicussion on EGR systems (Due to owners searching for a solution to the engine distruction issue 3lt's have)

Re: 1KZ-TE Excess Black Smoke on take off
Noticed some black crap weeping around ERG valve and did the mod 50,000 ago. No more black diesel mess around valve. (was only ever a slight weep over oil change time).
Have also been using 2 stroke oil (400:1) in fuel tank for the last 7000 and after having the 150,000 service done recently and now have another 4500k's up, the oil colour is MUCH less filthy than previously, nearly a mid to dark brown colour with bugger all soot in it. Has really cleaned up over the last 2 oil changes.
Read about this side effect on other forums and didn't believe it, but now can see the difference. Apparently burns cleaner.
Fitted the DP Chip a couple of weeks ago and made heaps of difference when using the boot over 100 kph for over taking.
Will have the 2500kg van on in two weeks (reason for chip install) and hope to see a bit of extra pull on hills.
Travelling 990 k's each week for the past 7 weeks and fuel consumption is as good as it has ever been and maybe a bit better.
Sit in cruise control at 105 kph and did 1183 k's on 143 lts. 8.27 k's to ltr.John

Re: 1KZ-TE Excess Black Smoke on take off
Sorry to bring up an old topic folks but seems to fit the bill. I am about to block off the egr on my 1kz and not sure weather to block the vacume line or put in a plate. On my old surf I just blocked the vacume line with a ball bearing and assume that worked but if the valve is already sticky, I am thinking I might be better off doing the plate this time. What are others thoughts.
