  • D4D Turbo

Anyone know for certain if the D4D turbo is water cooled? I'd read somewhere (might have been in a cool down after driving thread) that they were but I can't see any coolant pipes to or from the turbo.

    Thanks,

Yes it sure is, non water cooled turbos died out on production cars twenty years ago.

All turbos run oil lines for bearing lube and cooling, and most since the late 80s run lines for engine coolant for addtional bearing cooling.

Audi run water cooled turbos (eg: Audi A4 1.8T)

Well you learn something every day, I've owned a couple of 1.8T engined Audis and always thought they were oil cooled only

            Re: D4D Turbo

The problem with oil cooling, is the oil need to be at low pressure, so it doesn't blow past the seals and into the turbine, and unfortunately with the low pressure you get slow flow. This means the oil can't take enough heat away, and you don't get much convection after the engine stops and it cooks the oil, damaging the bearings.
