  • Ironman Suspension

    Hey folks,
I have just replaced my original shocks and springs with Ironman products. I did the installation my self.

I researched all the information and decided that the Ironman products were the ones that would suit my truck best, yes price had an imput in my decision but it wasn't the deciding factor. My truck is not used for competition, its used daily by the bride and loaded up on weekends for camping trips, our 4wding is mostly fire trails and occasionally sand.

I ordered a set of standard height, they have a 45mm rise over original, constant load springs and Nitro gas shocks.
For the front springs I ordered the 50-100kg extra weight set as i have an Ironman Commercial winch bar fitted and an Ironman winch on the wish list and 0-300kg extra weight set for the rear springs, as i have a ply wood set of shelves with all the recovery gear, tools and camping gear that one carries along with a 50l fridge on a slide at upwards of 60 litres of water.

My local supplier, Mascot Motors - Nowra, did a fantastic job and had the items in stock exceptionally quick.

I received TOYO38C front springs with 12661GR shocks and TOYO38B rear springs with 12691GR shocks

    (240,000 km's original suspension)

Before I started I measured from the rim to the flare at each corner. FR 730mm, RR 720mm, FL 725mm RL 775mm.

The install took me quite a long time, 5 hours, as the front springs were exceptionally hard to compress, the rear springs and shocks were in in twenty minutes, after reading some of the horror stories about the rear Left shock top nut I couldn't believe how easy it was.... I actually got under the car, supported by axle stands of course, and had no trouble at all, apart from my neanderthal sized hands, removing or tightening the top nut, my son assisted by twisting the shock from the out side while I held the nut secure, EASY.

Once all were installed I was not happy with the ride height as the front had lifted 4inches, wow, did it look like shite and drove unsteadially, even dangerously apart from the fact that the front tyres were now angled completely the wrong way out at the top and in at the bottom...

(Take a look at how high that front end sits)

The new heights were FR 830mm, RR 780mm, FL 820mm, RL 775mm.

I first thought it would settle down with a run but it did not, i then thought it would settle down once the winch was fitted, the winch weighs 40kg, so I weighing 120kg jumped up on the bullbar, but it didnt move, bugger.

So I returned to Mascot motors and informed them of my plight, i was expecting an argument or worse, but once they had a look at the photos i had taken they too agreed that the front springs were unacceptable, further discussions with Ironman on the phone and new front springs ,TOYO38B, were being dispatched, hows that for customer service ?, the new springs arrived the very next day .

I installed the new springs this morning and WOW, what a difference, the Prado sits level and looks FANTASTIC, FR 795mm, RR 780mm, FL 790mm, RL 775mm. The install took 3 hours as i had a bit of a idea of what to expect and with the previous springs my CV angle was too sharp and had caused my CV boots to leak grease everywhere, what a mess, after a test drive it appears that the boots are not leaking now, lucky for me, will double check tomorrow in the day light.

    (Perfect)

Am I happy ??? You bet . One extremely happy Ironman Customer.....

    Alan

    Re: Ironman Suspension

I had Ironman Suspension on two of my Jeeps in South Africa, and had absolutely no problems. I would consider them again in future.

Your Prado is looking good Alan. I'm also glad to hear the rear shocks are not quite the nightmare I have read on here.

Yep they were great when I had mine fitted. Thinking of getting the coil and strut spacers to add onto mine as well.

        Re: Ironman Suspension

I installed Dobinsons on mine and got the same result as you - the front sat higher than the rear. It rode alright but as soon as I put the camper trailer on the back the height difference became even more obvious. Eventually I started having recurring problems with the CV's so replaced the front springs with Kings and got things back closer to factory ratios (only higher ). The ride improved straight away.

From your measurements it still looks like the rear is still slightly lower than the front (my is 760mm front/780mm rear approx) so I'd still keep a close eye on those CV's. Mine are almost level now, not on the 45 degree angle they were.

I wonder just how much research goes into producing some of these suspension kits. I think some manufacturers must work out what to fit to which vehicle using measurements only and dont actually do a trial fit before producing a parts list. I know in my case it was quite obvious that things werent quite right but it took me a little while to admit it to myself.

Good to see you are happy with your Ironman suspesion. I also put them on my 90 series and have been very happy with them for the purpose i use them for.
No regrets buying them just had a few dramas to start with and something for you to maybe keep a eye on. I had the same spring setup as yourself(your original order) and after a 5000km trip (Bitu/dirt/sand) the backend dropped about 200mm and the front the rubbers on the shocks where all flogged out and clunking.
All was replaced free of charge (Ironman agreed the newer style rubbers should have been sent out) the springs they said where the wrong ones put on the vehicle (maybe because they sent the wrong ones ??? who knows? ).
As quoted above TOYO38C front springs and TOYO38B rear springs, the last letter on the part type tells you what sort of weight these springs can handle. Put simply to me the C - Constant loads (towing trailers, heavy loads, etc) and B - Parttime or moderate loads. So the "B" springs I had on the back basically compressed because of to much load.
So in went a tougher spring and 25mm spacer and its pretty level (always got 20l water all rec gear and tools stored in drawers and lots of other crap ready for the day trip!).
Like I said still very happy with Ironman just keep an eye on them over the next year. No real fuss to get it sorted they even came around my house to have a sqizz.
          Happy 4wheeling

            Hi Guys,

thanks for the comments on the look of the truck, we are really happy with it...

i certainely will be watching the rear end, and all should level out once the winch goes on...fingers crossed, btw its so easy to drop the rear coils a small spacer if required shouldnt be a hassle...

thanks again and i hope we catch up someday........

              Re: Ironman Suspension

              Hi Kezal,
Just wondering if you could let me know how your kit goes off road. I have just put in the 2" lift from Suspension Stuff and after taking it out a few times now find it really quite harsh. A lot more so than my old gq was any way. Hitting holes or lumps really throws the car around even to the point that on badly corrugated roads the whole car just bounces across the road not down the road.
I'm thinking now maybe I should have bought the Ironman Kit.
              Cheers,
              Fritz.

                Hi Alan,
Almost 9 months down, are you still happy with the Ironman suspension?
I have a 3.4 VX Prado and is considering Ironman.
                Thanks
