  • Oil filter and wrench for Prado 120 Diesel (1KZ-TE)

After a very frustrating session of searching and reading over the last 2 hours yielded nothing meaningful, I hope someone can straighten something out for me.

So, I've recently had the priviledge of buying a used 2003 Prado GXL, Diesel, Auto. I also wanted to do the 5,000kms services myself (basically oil and filter changes) and ordered the oil filter wrench (another great tip from PP) from Toyota (part no. 09228-07501 OIL FILTER WRENCH). I collected it on Friday, only to be somewhat confused :? when I saw the the wrench would fit a filter that is way smaller than the one on the truck at the moment.

It was serviced as a buying pre-condition so the filter is new (or so I hope any way). I showed the guys at Llewelyn's Toyota spares, and they too were a bit confused themselves. They got someone in the know to look and checked on their system and apparently the filter I have on has been "superceded" by a newer one (90915-YZZD2 according to them). I said that my filter was new and they figured it must have been old stock for the guys at Clintons Toyota where it was serviced.

I asked and they said that I should use the new filter next time and apparently it's a better filter despite the reduction in size. Something about packing more filter element in.

Later that day, I checked with a mate of mine who also had a very recent service of his 2005 GXL Diesel (also a non-D4D 1KZ-TE). He too had the same "larger" filter that I had on. I figured I'd find someone one the web with a similar concern, but I haven't had any luck.

Here are some thoughts / concerns I'm having:
It seems possible that they made a mistake on their system and that the smaller so called "superceding" filter is actually meant for a D4D ?
It could also be that the smaller filter does indeed superceed the old larger one, but I'm unable to confirm this from a different source.
I've come across another different part number for oil filter wrench 09228-10002, but could not find anything more to know if this parthaps fits the larger one.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? What is the part number for the toyota oil filter (if different from what I've been given above).

I'm in need of some mental re-alignment here...

    Thanks,
    Jaans

Re: Oil filter and wrench for Prado 120 Diesel (1KZ-TE)

    90915-YZZD2 is the filter for the D4D (actually the following engines 1KDFTV, 1MZFE, 1RZE, 2KDFTV, 2RZ, 2RZE, 2TRFE, 2TZFE, 2VZFE, 3MZFE, 3RZFE, 3VZE, 3VZFE and 5VZFE)

The 1kz (and 1hz found in the 80/100 series) are "High" soot engines and run a two stage filter; Inside the one filter is a standard high flow filter and a bypass filter.

They are quite expensive but it's important that you use the correct one on the 1kz.

90915-30002 is the one you want.

The 5k services are oil only (if you're following the service schedule)

Excellent... thanks for clearing that up Mick!

Any chance you know the oil filter wrench part number for the 90915-30002 oil filter?

I'm not 100% sure but I think it is 09228-10002 as you found.

Ryco also do an oil filter if you want to save a few dollars Z334 (still about $30 though)

Why not just go to supercheap and by an adjustable oil filter spanner??

Yep... just as you said Mick.
Got the spanner exchanged and the part number is indeed 09228-10002.

The Toyota guys we're a bit baffled (and didn't seem to care really  ) - must be a "Parts Dept" vs. "Servicing Dept" mindset or something - either way it now fits perfectly.

Chester: Yeah I know... I could just get and adjustable strappy thingy, I just figured that if I'm going to do mine and a mate's one regularly I might as well get a tool that makes it a bit easier and lessens the risk of damaging the oil filter and resultantly it's seat / thread. Not really an issue I know, but to me it's not that expensive when it makes the job easier with a simple socket extension.

              Thanks again!

                Hi Jaans,

Out of curiosity what was the damage for the filter wrench, if you don't mind??

                Thanks

Hi Matt... it was about $34.

(The hi-lux washer jets were more than that!)

Re: Oil filter and wrench for Prado 120 Diesel (1KZ-TE)

Hi Fellas. Have been using aftermarket Fram (Z334) and purelator filters on both my 1KZ van and 1KZ-TE Prado. Genuine filters around $45- NZ whereas aftermarket are around $25- NZ. I always change my oil and filter every 5,000 km and use GTX 15/40 diesel. I think my old 2.4 and 2.8's also had the same filters (courier vans) and all of my vehicle have done high kms and hard work (plenty of heavy towing) over the years. Have never had the sumps off any of them and can't justify the higher price of genuine oil filters. My toyota technician son hates me using them but can't argue with the evidence. I have always just used a chain filter wrench on my 1/2" drive socket set - no probs. Tried using one of those wrenches which grab the end of the filter but the damn thing just slipped so back to the old favourite in the end. Well that's my two bobs worth. Cheers.

Re: Oil filter and wrench for Prado 120 Diesel (1KZ-TE)

In my time as a grease monkey on the mines I fitted thousands of Ryco Z334's (mainly 1HZ trayback 79series) and never once had a problem.

IMO if you are changing the filter regularly on your own rig you should only ever need a filter tool once - the 1st time you take it off after some TWAT has tightened it with a tool to near breaking point :x

All filters will advise to spin on until contact with the seal and then tigten approx a further 3/4 turn.

This is easily achieved by hand! Accordingly the next time you need to change it a good grip by hand should easily remove it.

Overtightening down with a tool increases risk of damage to the filter body, seal and also the seat and thread.

This is also a good practise with spin on fuel filters. Imagine being stuck out bush with a blocked fuel filter due to crap fuel, you have a spare filter (I always have one in the drawers) but you cant get it off cos its too tight!!!!!

As i said above I have fitted thousands and never once had one come loose.

Hope this helps save someone some pain down the track.

                      Chriso

Looks as though Toyota still has not fixed its inventory listings. When I purchased a filter, I was given the smaller D4D one. At least the parts sales person was on the boil and picked up it was incorrect. He then took my chassis number, punched it into his computer and voila, the correct filter was then located. Don't fall for the "they have been superseded" crap...

Spot on Chriso. My 7yo can spin mine off. If it cant be spun off by hand then its too tight. I just put some fresh oil on the rubber seal, spin it till it seats and then a small turn. I have actually seen 'mechanics' put them ON with a wrench

Similar with sump plugs. The number of morons you see heaving away on them so they 'dont come loose' is crazy.
