  • Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

    Hey guys.

Lately myself and a mate from work have been getting VERY poor fuel economy from our 2008 GXL D4D's. Mine is Manual and his is Auto. We both bought them in June 2008 and have approx 71,000kms. Both vehicles have the same mods, but mine has a Safari Snorkel, and are lease vehicles and are serviced religiously (We live in the same place and work in the same place!!!)

Normally we have a competition to see who can get the most kms from the first tank before it switches to the Aux tank. My best is 1027, his is 1065. Over the last few months we have both noticed a dramatic drop in fuel efficiency. I filled my car to the brim at 70,500kms. I drove back to Mackay this morning and the fuel gauge is almost ready to switch to the Aux tank. The odometer now shows 71,186kms. This is 686kms from 90 odd litres of diesel. This equates to 13.11L/100km. The local Toyota dealer has put me on a fuel consumption test. I am wondering if anyone has been having dramas with theirs or if it is normal around this age.

Also does anyone know the rated fuel efficiency of a D4D Prado?

We both use Caltex as we have fuel cards for them, but different servos. Probably fuel from the same distributor though!!!

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

Sometimes they seem to differ in the anti foaming agent meaning that because of the foaming you are putting in less than you think.

Example at my regular caltex servo using the fast fill i can fill up to the first click let it settle by cleaning the windscreen or something and then get another 15 litres in after the foam has gone but often i do not have the patience for this so the car is not filled

At another servo i can only get 7 in from the first click.

So it depends on your patience also i think the fuel guage is a load of rubbish mine can vary anywhere up to 200km as to when it will go from the first to second tank under same condtions. I have even had it click onto the second tank pull over for the night and then it tells me it is back on the first the next morning for 200k. I have even had the orange low fuel light come on with different amounts left in the tanks after filling (there always seems to be 20 litres slopping around in there somewhere no matter how many days i drive with the yellow light on).

The only way to be shure of consumtion is as follows
        1. Fill up and let it trickle in up to the brim and i mean spilling out with fuel not foam fuel
        2. Drive for at least a couple of 100 k record the kays
3 Fill back up right to the brim again

Record amount of fuel used and work out consumtion over the k travelled then repeat at least 5 times to rule out different driving styles temperatures etc
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

This happened to me when I switched to Caltex Vortex Diesel from normal Caltex Diesel. Same thing happened to a mate, I've gone back to normal Caltex Diesel.

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

Thanks for the replies guys. I just filled up the tanks. I always fill to the brim as I normally travel on the highway immediately after. I got 95.88L into it and had only traveled 655kms. That equates to 14.62L/100kms about 99% highway kms. Will do a few more trips and record them all on the for that Toyota gave me. See what they come up with.

D4D, we only get regular Caltex Diesel here. So that is all I use. I always use the same pump at the same servo. For this reason... Makes it easier to argue with manufacturers.

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

I have 77k on mine D4D. From new have been getting 900 to 1050km (depending on how I drive).

Following my 70k service my change to the aux tank started occurring at 750 to 800km. I checked fuel economy but found I was still getting roughly the same km/l - ie using no more fuel than normal. This occurred for the next 3 tanks. I was planning on talking to my local toyota centre as to whether they have modified something in the software or if there was a problem with the fuel level sensor.

My last tank I got 1050km! Intend to check it for the next tank and if it re-occurs I will take it up with toyota at the 80k service.

Hi, Ive got an 08, auto..30 000 clicks...she does about 700k's to about 90 liters, which i reckon is pretty good considering the gear that is on it and pulling a 6 meter boat round the place, but meh im not one to care to much for fuel ecomony n am more than happy to just feed em what they need...theres nothing more fun than burning fuel Get aboout 1200k's till the low fuel light.

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

I drove home from work yesterday morning. The fuel gauge was at the 3/4 mark on first tank. When I got home (230kms) the gauge was on the half tank mark. Normally it drops about 1mm before it switches to second tank. Today I got in to go to the shop and the gauge is reading about 3mm above half mark???

Might have to talk to Toyota about sender unit. Still doesn't explain the 14L/100kms economy though!!! I am thinking stale fuel as the car normally gets refilled just as it switches to second tank. So I am going to try to use all the fuel before filling up again.

Does anyone think a fuel additive would help? ie Diesel Power, Fuel Doctor, Wynns Diesel Treatment?

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

As far as I know, the fuel constantly circulates through both tanks as a result of excess fuel at the fuel pump....used for cooling.... being fed back to the aux tank.

Re: Poor Fuel Economy from 2008 D4D

My 2007 D4D has always got around 1050km before it swaps to the second tank, but ever since the 80K service (it has now done 88K) it has struggled to get to 800km. My injectors were replaced under warranty at 60,000km due to the cold start rattle, and guess what - it has come back. The rattle isn't as bad as last time, but it is early days yet.

My last fill which included 70k of towing my Jayco Camper was 12.8l/100km. I have always got around 9.5l/100km. Always used BP from the same service station.

I wonder what happened at the 80K service? Perhaps an ECU remap?

I'll what happens at the 90K service in a couple of weeks.

I noticed my fuel gauge change post the 70k service as well, it seemed to switch earlier however the fuel consumtion stayed much the same, remembering i have a V6 it was 650-350 for first and second tank, it is now more level, ie 550-600 - 450-400 for second tank, not sure why????

Hubble maybe someone has stole your D4D and swapped it for a V6, better check under the bonnet.

I had been burning SHELL and doing much better as well before going to CALTEX. My last 3 tanks have been from CALTEX and must say they are my worst performers in economy. I thought maybe my driving habits but little change there so maybe there is a something to the CALTEX fuel making for poor performance.

Just to fill you all in with the fuel tanks, the fuel always is drawn from the front tank and the rear tank pumps into the front tank, so when the 90L comes on it may not be always accurate as there still maybe fuel in the rear tank. There is a thread on here some where on the way the fuel system works.

                              Hey all,

I have tried to use as much fuel as I can out of the system and filled up with "fresh" fuel. Will see how that goes.
