  • Water Control Unit

I have been informed that late model common rail diesels should have a water control unit to stop the problem of water getting into the system via fuel. It is apparently not uncommon for this problem to occur causing breakdown and big bucks to fix. I have spoken to a couple of people who have had them fitted to their vehicles and have been told that some of the big mines fit them to all their vehicles. Its about $700 instal and I would like to know peoples thoughts on this forum. Equally I'm being told that you should be very careful where you get your fuel for example Woolies Caltex sources cheap overseas fuel, as opposed to stand alone Caltex which has a much better quality fuel, and dont touch United. Interested to know everyones thoughts on this as well.

    Re: Water Control Unit

I thought it was part of the fuel filter. My GXL has a light on the dash that indicates water in the fuel then you are supposed to go to the filter and turn a little tap and run it into a container till the water is out. I will say i do find the internet a microcosm of horror stories. i.e dodgy fuel and what ever, i can say after driving extensivly including the outback i have never has this problem.

As for the mines probably could be a problem as a previous employer of mine ran its own tanks for the fleet and it was dodgy due to no looking after at all
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

      Re: Water Control Unit

There was an article in a recent copy of 4WD action about fitting an after market water filter in the fuel line before the fuel filter. The fuel filter does capture an amount of water and will trigger an alarm/light on the dash if enough water is detected. It is easy to release this water from the fuel filter. I don't recall how much they suggested the after market water filter cost in the magazine but it was way less than $700 and would probably only take an hour or so to install yourself.
