    ive cleaned out mine at car lovers and drowned the engine bay many a time, but i did try and keep most of the water off the fusebox, the pressure washers does really well as well as the degreaser to go along with it, so if ya just dont hold it on there till it is floating it will be all good. cheers samo

      Re: cleaning a diesel engine

      I haven't go my engine bay that dirty yet that a quick squirt with a detergent spray bottle and then low pressure hose don't fix.

      However a few people I know use this method ;

      1. CT18 truckwash ( diluted ) in a garden pressure sprayer - spray around the engine bay.
      2. Leave overnight.
      3. Rinse off with low pressure hose, or sprayer filled with plain water. Stil l avoiding anything obviously sensitive like battery contollers or ECUs
      4. Spray electrical connectors with WD40 to dispel any water that may have gotten in.

      I am not overly comfortable with the thought of using a high pressure washer under there- water from those things can force it's way into lots of undesirable places ( electrical plugs/sockets etc and sensors ). It may not cause problems immediately, but show up later on. I used a small Karcher on the mower last weekend - took me an hour to get it going again, water got through the air cleanerbox, then saturated the paper filter, then got into the carby.
      Cheers, Wayne

        High Corallen,
        I wash my engine bay about every third car wash using normal car wash detergent, brush and hose off with normal garden hose pressure I also use degreaser in selected areas after an oil filter change for example and hose off. I have used a pressure washer in a car wash and at home when a bit grotty but take care not to drown the fuze boxes, or hit any hot exhaust manifolds, no problems with my Redarc.
        One thing I learnt from my old Hilux days, I always Glad Wrap the AC Compressor drive pully and elecromagnetic clutch, as the internal clutch bearing from past experience fails early if regularly drowned, if using a pressure washer be carefull around the firewall rubber grommets you dont want a wet interior.
        After my engine bay dries off I use Armour- All everywhere (keep away from windscreen) to coat rubber hoses and all painted bits including battery tops, my engine bay always looks like new, I never allow anyone to use degreaser on the engine bay after a service or paint the battery terminals in that crappy blue stuff, clean all your battery terminals and seal them with brush of fisholene or a product like Lecraseal all my high current dual battery connections are coated in Lectraseal.
        Hope this helps a little

          Re: cleaning a diesel engine

          When people say "clean" what do you mean??
          If I go away and get mud all through the engine bay, there's no way it'll come off without some sort of high pressure as far as I know. It just gets in everywhere.
          Are you guys just talking about general use cleaning or big globs of mud stuck everywhere?
          Cheers - Phil Taylor
