  • Single DIN Radio

    HI Guys

I have tried to search for information on this but couldnt find what I was looking for so here goes.
I have replaced the stock radio unit with a single DIN Pioneer, the problem I now have is there is a gap either side of the radio, what have people done to fill in this gap when they have replaced the original unit?
I also have a iComm CB below it and it has the same gaps either side of the DIN Uunit.

My next question is, when I took the original unit out I noticed there was a spare plug behind the radio, it looks like an antenna plug but is a bit thinner, does anyone know what this is for?

    Cheers

aerpro i think supply the two side infill pieces, or if you search on here, you can get the genuine toyota ones to fit.

the aftermarket ones are fine. you may need to look for one of those empty pockets, as they come in the kit.

jut fit them next to the CB and HU, and you may need longer screws to secure them in. be carefull to not use screws which are too long, and damage the internals of the two units. i used longer ones which i trimmed down with a dremel.

8608, did you get a ready made harness or wire the new head unit yourself?
If you did the wiring yourself could you please post the wiring instructions for the different coloured wires?
I also purchased a unit with a harness but it has one plug different to the original.
I have a wiring diagram for the new head unit, but I'm not sure of which wire connects to what on the Prado's original harness.
I'm afraid that the wires wont match up to the functiif ons and I mmight end up short circuiting something.

The radio space in the Prado is wider than standard DIN, so the infill pieces are needed.
Here there is black foam either side of the UHF as well.

          Thanks guys

After posting last night I managed to find a company called fascias online (fascias.com.au) and they had the parts needed for $20 so all is good, now I just have to wait for them to arrive.

          Cheers

            Re: Single DIN Radio

aerpro have pre-wired plug and play looms. just get one to suit late model toyota units, and it should have 2 plugs to plug into the factory loom. the other end should have a black and brown connector.

then look for a loom that plugs into the harness your headunit has, and the other end should match up to the black and brown.

if you do it this way, you shouldn't need to cut and solder etc etc.

it just gets a bit tight with all the loom-age behind the units. i actually cut, sortened and spliced the above looms into the headunit and toyota loom. just makes it easy to change head units, or just with removal.

just took some pics for you. not sure of part numbers though, sorry.

the single black plug is for my old Sony single DIN head unit.

the 2 black and brown plugs are universal which allows you to change cars or head units with other looms.

the 2 white plugs are to plug into the factory toyota loom.

easy as. all the wiring is there, and you can even snip the blue wire for amp power turn on if you need. also include illumination for most units and a power antenna feed.

At this point the standard speakers are fine for me. May look at upgrading them further down the track but there are a few more mods coming before that happens.

                    Re: Single DIN Radio

Have also upgraded the factory head unit with a pioneer radio cassette/6disc stacker which had aux input.

I also found that once upgraded the audio was 100% better but did upgrade the front speakers with pioneer 350 watt 6x9's.

I think McBain has covered the wiring diagram from the factory head unit before.

Just make sure the power antenna output in the factory loom is wired up or your window aerial reception will be very poor-speaking from experience...

                      Latest Update

I managed to find a cable with right angle connector for the IPod.
Made a small groove in the ICOMM din mound and poked it through

ran cable down behind AC controls and to the back of the ashtray, cut a small portion out of the ashtray holder so the cable could move in and out with the ashtray and the IPod fits in snug, ashtray can be closed with IPod in and playing.

Closes up nicely so noone would ever know its there.

Only know its there when I have to plug the cable in to charge it up, havent been able to work out a way of getting that in the ashtray as well, not really enough room there.

                      Cheers
