  • Whistling

    Hi Guys,

    I have a diesel-auto-GXL with 11,000 on the clock, serviced at 9,500km.
Over the last couple of days I have noticed a low ‘whistle’ coming from the engine bay when accelerating moderately. It only seems to occur when the engine has moderate load, i.e. won’t do it on even gently sloping down hills or when under heavy acceleration (motor noise drowns it out?). With very careful throttle control I can get the whistle to stop or continue until at the desired speed.

Is it turbo related? I’m familiar with normal ‘turbo whistle’. This is a deeper noise. I have been pretty good at letting everything idle down after high speed runs.

Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

    Re: Whistling

My guess is it is turbo related. I noticed exactly the same thing on my work vehicle (150 series gxl diesel). No noticeable turbo whistle from inside the vehicle prior to the first service but following the first service a low pitched turbo whistle could be very clearly heard. I don't know what they did at the service that made the difference so noticeable but it was clear.

Is yours a manual by any chance? I now drive an auto diesel for work (was driving a manual diesel) and the whistle is much more obvious on the manual version.

It was never loud enough to annoy me though.

    Have fun

      Re: Whistling

I had this on my 120 also when i first go it. I knew it wasn't turbo noise but couldn't point my finger to it. I took it down to Toyota and they couldn'tr hear anything.

It still does it occassionaly and now has 50,000 on the clock. still no idea but doesn't seem to affect the performance so have just got used to it.

We have four D4D hiluxes and they all whistle from 1100rpm to about 1800rpm. I beleive its just the variable vane turbo spooling. You can only hear it on the outside when taking off then its gone.

Makes sense at the D4D in the lux makes peak torque at 1600rpm.
