  • Click goes the ECU?

Had an odd thing happen last week - driving along at 100kph on the blacktop and an odd clicking sound from the area up under the glove box. Never heard this before. No air con on. No other accessories on. Then again the other day in the city traffic and series of clicking noises from the same area - all where the ECU is located. Any ideas out there? No error codes on the Scanguage - thankfully!

    Re: Click goes the ECU?

Mate I have the same clicking noice coming from behind the glove box also. So far I have pulled the dash apart including removing the blower motor and just leaving the airbag in there, no luck in finding it. Removed the passanger side inner wheel arch guard and checked all the spot welds, all good. Pulled apart the passanger door, all good. Even went as far as buying a stethascope to try and locate the sound, can pin point to just below the dash on the left hand side but can't find anything loose. Even sprayed a heap of silicone spray under the dash which made it go away for a bit but now its back. Its only a small ticking noice but once you know its there its all you can hear!!!!!

I'm thinking its the wiring loom making the noise but will keep looking until I find it! I will be watching this thread with interest.

It really sounds to me like a relay cutting in and out but nothing seems to have changed - engine performance and everything else is all OK. I will get it back to the Toyota people see if they can figure it out.

        Re: Click goes the ECU?

I ended up going through the dash and inner guard again over the weekend trying to locate the source, I have now admitted that it has gotten the better of me :x and have organised to take one of the toyota mechanics for a spin to see if he can locate the noise. If they think they know what it is I will book it in and let them have a go. Mine sounds like a relay too but given that it only happens in transit and is quite eratic I think mine is caused by some sort of vibration.

          Re: Click goes the ECU?

Hey mate have you had any luck sorting out the clicking noise. I finally found and sorted ot what was causing the ticking noise in mine. Took a toyota mechanis for a spin who said it was definetely something out side the cabin in the front guard arear. Ended up being a spot weld that let go just behind where the front fender meets the passenger door. Once I pulled the guard off it was as plain as day what was causing the noise. Fixed it up and bolted the guard back on and so far I have had over a week of blissful quite driving

I got some pics of the offending spot weld I can post if it helps.

              Re: Click goes the ECU?

View without the guard showing which spot weld come loose.

              Close up of said weld

There was also a small crack appearing which I drilled the end of and welded up to stop spreading. Wacked a bit of left over sika flex from the snorkel install around the edges for good measure as well. It was a bit of a mission tracking the noise down but hopefully it helps someone else out there if it ever happens to them. Would be easier just to check with a telescopic mirror thingy once the splash guard was removed before actually taking the guard off.

The ticking noice was driving me nuts and it is such a nice quite ride in the prado now!!! Finally happy with the thing.
