  • Dual battery trays

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking at installing a dual battery system and am currently researching battery trays. I have a petrol 08 prado and have had both the piranha and outback accessories tray recommended to me. The position of the second battery will be behind the drivers headlight. Could anyone provide me with any feedback and the pros and cons that they may have encountered with either of these trays?

    Thanks
    Matt.

    Re: Dual battery trays

I have the Outback Accessories tray in a 2006 TD. It's a good tray as it provide plenty of protection for the battery and the mounting is great. It comes with the fittings you will need to relocate a few bits and pieces that you don't need to in a TD. From what I've seen both the Outback Accessories and Piranha are about on par with the mounting of the tray to prevent/minimise any damage to the guards.

There is another unit as well to consider produced by Off Road Downunder. If you look around on PP you will see that a few installs for this have gone ahead. People are pretty happy with that.

The Outback Accessories wasn't a cheap option at about $170 but it is strong and secure and has served me well since I installed it about 18months ago.

Same here mine was great or is great. The only thing I had to replace was the wing nuts supplied to hold down the battery. Not great matterial but everything else spot on.

        Hi Matt,

I have the Piranha in my 08 Petrol. The kit came with the brackets to move the power steering reservoir. Good instructions with the kit for an almost easy install (one bolt was a bit of a pain).

        Cheers Neil

          Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your feedback. I'm still trying to decide if I go with the outback accessories tray or the Offroad downunder. They both look like they are sturdy units and should do the job very well. Any tips/things to look out for when installing these trays?

          Cheers,
          Matt.

            Matt,
Not sure if you've completed this, but I've just added the Offroad Downunder tray to my Prado, easy as.. The only tricky bit was the two nylok nuts, you have to get your hand up inside the guard, long arms help...
The installed product is solid as a rock....

I second this, I have just fitted the same tray with no dramas and very solid. I did change out the two bolts that hold the side to the bottom with shorter bolts and used regular nuts with loctite to reduce rubbing on the cable loom though.

                Re: Dual battery trays

After looking at all the trays that I can :? and seeing how they all mount, the question I have is with regards to the power steering on the petrol model that needs to be relocated.
I like the tray design of the Offroad Downunder but not real sure about reshaping the original power steering bracket and just having it held with the one bolt. Do any of the other trays provide a new bracket of allow the power steering to be relocated to a different position or to the side of the battery tray?

VKPrado, I have the Outback Accessories tray from Opposite Lock. This had a bracket for relocating the Power Steering. I'm not sure if the Piranah has this.

                    VKPrado,

you have to use part of the existing bracket to relocate the power steering reservoir. You drill out the rivets in the bracket and then bolt on the new top. See numbers 4 and 5 in the picture at http://piranhaoffroad.com.au/index.php/ ... rapo7.html

Thanks for the info. The Piranha tray is the only one I can find that can be confirmed for a V6 when the reservoir goes.

Thanks for the info but just want to double check about the Outback tray as there are no Opposite Lock stores in Tasmania so would have to order one of them in so need to be very sure it is right  .

Hi guys, i'm in the process of installing dual battery's in the in-laws 120 series 2009 Diesel Prado. Any more comments on which battery tray to buy? I have a Piranha tray in my 08 Diesel but at $200 for just the tray is it worth it or is there a cheaper option?
                        Cheers

                            Hi All,

Talking about Battery trays, where do you fit them on a 08 Model GXL D4D?
                            Behind the Drivers Side Headlight?

I heard that there have been issues with Cracking and fatigue with installs behind the headlight, so ARB mount the second Battery tray near the Fuel Pump.

                            Can someone please advise

I have mine mounted behind the headlight on my 2008 GXL D4D, I don't recall anyone complaining
of guards cracking on the 2008 models and later so maybe Toyota fixed it with the 2008 update?
