  • New to Diesel Power

    Hi Gents
New to Pradopoint but have been on LCOOL for a while, currently in the process of updating 2000 model 90 series Grande V6 to a 2007 GXL D4D with very low K's.
I have not owned a diesel before but was very impressed with the car when I drove it.
I will not be modifying the car at this point as it will be a daily commuter and family vehicle an also to tow the boat (about 2000kg when loaded)

Have been looking at the fuel consumption etc. and it certainly outweighs the thought of a petrol vehicle.

A couple of questions I have asked on LCOOL but have yet to receive a reply 1. Turbo cooling, what is the general consensus on cooling the turbo and turbo timers, the dealer (local toyota dealership) said that it is not necessary but I have my reservations in relation to this.
    2. Fuel additive, a number of threads on LCOOL had discussed a fuel additive without naming it and I have no idea what it would be and why it is used. Is this related to the diesel quality in Australia or is this getting better with the introduction of the "Vortex Diesel"?

    Thanks for your help!
    Cheers
    John

I'm not a fan of turbo timers, personally I have an EGT gauge installed (post turbo) and just allow the engine to idle until the EGT is below 200 deg. This way I know the tirbo has cooled to an approprite temp. as the time to cool and vary dramatically.

I don't have any experience with additives, though a 2007 D4D would have come from the factory with the original type injectors. There is a long thread on here about issues with these injectors - Toyota made modifications to the injectors in 2008 and changed the injector type completely in the 150.

    Thanks for your help!

      Thanks Leachy
I am aware that Turbo Timers are not exactly legal on this side of the country also but it would be unlucky to get booked for having one.
The EGT gauge you have what are these worth installed and would it be something ARB would supply and fit?

The injector issue again would it be something worth having done in the near future the vehicle has only got 25000 K's on it and again what would the replacement cost be?

The EGT sensor (thermocouple) is installed in either the exhuast manifold before the turbo or the dump pipe after the turbo. Mine was installed in the dump pipe as part of a exhaust system upgrade. An EGT (thermocouple + gauge) costs about $300-$400 and the thermocouple would normally be installed by an exhaust fitter.

This is something you should be aware of and monitor - if the problem does arise it will most likely become apparent during cold weather. If the injectors do develop the cold start rattle and the vehicle is under warranty Toyota "should" replace them with the revised injectors. The cost if out of warrenty is about $6K.

          Re: New to Diesel Power

First off welcome to the forum.
I have the same vehicle as you are getting and am wrapped in it.

Towed a 1.8t van around oz last year and it towed it with ease and was economical as well.

Regarding fuel additives I was strongly advised against it .

            Thanks Leachy and Pedro
I will check with the dealer about the injectors as there is the balance of the new car warranty plus a 3 year extended warranty that is included in the purchase as long as I get the vehicle serviced at the Toyota dealership I purchased it at.

I will look seriously at the EGT as I was talking to my wife about running the engine to cool the turbo and she thinks it's a PITA to have to do that, so I may need some form of prompt to remind her.

I was also reading about the cold area or Alpine fuel in the link Pedro attached, we have an annual Ski trip and I was just wondering if I fill up at Cooma prior to heading further into the mountains will they have the Alpine Fuel there?

            Cheers

              Re: New to Diesel Power

              Hi Strawb,
They definitely have alpine diesel in Cooma. The fuel in Jindabyne is also alpine diesel but it costs a couple of cents more than Cooma. Canberra might be an even better place to fill up before you head up the mountain - its a few cents cheaper again than Cooma and a full tank in Canberra should keep you going for a week or so of skiing without too much trouble.
08 Grey VX D4D, Black King steelies, Mickey Thompson MTZ, CalOffRoad modded Bilstein - Skyjacker suspension, front and rear ARB lockers, Cibie lights, Black Widow drawers and barrier, 75Ah Thumper, TPX091 GPS, GME TX3420 and more dints and scratches than it should have.

                Thanks Mayhem
We only ski Selwyn as it is good for the kids, plus the fact that the last two trips to Perisher, the wife and I have had knee injuries.
I generally fill up at the servo where Inski is there in Sharp Street, I like to keep the Cooma economy going as it is my birth town and the Grand parents now dead, lived in Lambie St so the ski trip fills two purposes, check the family plot at the cemetry and go for a ski!

I really have a lot to learn about the diesel and it's just these little things that I'm finding out.
                Cheers

From my bad memory... 1k or there abouts for each injector.. (I am guessing they are hard to make). The pressure rail is a crimp on once throw away part. This is because its the only way to get a reliable seal at the high pressures involved (not sure if this is really true, but thats how they are assembled apparently).

                    Is that right?
