  • BumpStops??

    Hi all.
My first post on this forum after recently buy an 90 series Prado. Dunno if it was the right thing to buy yet, its been pretty hard going from a gq patrol wagon that was treated like a ute, to go to a civilised family wagon like the Prado. Makes me feel old (and my mates remind me of this at every opportunity)
Anyhow I was hoping some one could give some advice about the conical bumpstops in the rear springs, They seem to limit compression very quickly. Are they neccesary? If I need them why does is have other stops above the axel?? I havn't had them on any other car so I would appreciate if someone could enlighten me.
    Cheers,
    Fritz.

    Re: BumpStops??

Without looking at mine I'm pretty sure they're to guide the spring so it returns to the correct position when its stretched to the maximum, seeing as the springs aren't fixed at the top.

someone correct me if this is wrong!

      Re: BumpStops??

Bizarrely, the short wheelbase (well here in the UK anyway) doesn't have the rubber trumpets in the spring. The stops are outboard and they contact the back axle tube. I got some genuine stops for a long wheelbase and put them in. It turns out that without them the top of the spring just 'weather-vanes' around in the top donut. Who ever considered this was good engineering must need brain surgery. The effect of putting them in has been to make the vehicle quieter. There is less vibration transmitted due to the rubber. The spring centers snugly on the trumpet. You can cut segments off the trumpet section. If you fit air spring helpers, you have to cut all of the sections off. So if you want a longer travel, just cut one piece off. I fitted some spacers last week and in order to do this you HAVE to have the conical stops in there. The spacer fits inside the trumpet. If you have a standard set up, you can actually get enough articulation to pull the springs out by hand!. With longer springs etc, this becomes less easy. With spacers fitted - you've no chance. The centre of the cone doesn't really act as a spring guide - like it does on a Landrover because it doesn't actually disconnect. Unusually you seem to have both sets of stops!

Thanks for the replies guys, and for the photos Landcrusher.
Yours do look like they have a bit more clearance than mine at the moment. I still have the bumpstops on the axle aswell so i suppose if I cut the internal bumpstops down a bit it won't hurt anything. Might have to put one side up on a ramp to see how much they will crush, they may compress with the spring.....other wise having external bumpstops would be pointless.

You must have very weak springs or have a LOT of weight in the car to get the axle to touch the bump stops in the springs.I had 90 series for several years and even with one wheel tucked right up in the wheel arch it didnt touch the cones. You can cut some off the cone , to fit air bags in the springs you cut off two or three rings.I would be looking at some Raised springs first though.

            Re: BumpStops??

I need to cut some off mine actually as the cons now contact the stops before the outboard originals. However, although I can get in there with a blade to trim them, I won't be able to get the piece out!!! The coils are too tight for the piece to pass through. Doh. So I shall have to find some time to go through the whole thing again. There must be some difference in set up as I agree that you shouldn't hit the stops if the springs are good. I have OMEs in there and couldn't bottom out on the other stops. Not until I fitted these have I felt that 'dunk' when working the suspension. They will have to be trimmed.

              Re: BumpStops??

I have progressive bumpstops replacing the outboard one (at the far left of that last picture), but even sitting on that, with it compressed, I'm sure my conical bumpstop is not touching either (been a while since I looked into that).
