Is there a need to wind the turbo down with these vehicles?

Check with your insurance before thinking about these as it's illegal to leave your car running while unattended and the use of the turbo timer fits into that category. I attended a Basic Vehicle Maitenance day with my club recently and turbo timers where bought up and the mechanic who was helping us basically said you don't need them on 90s, 120s, 150s, 70s, 100s, 200s and probably a whole heap more.

        Re: Turbo Timer

the manual that came with the car specifically mentions to run the car at idle after long periods of running.

it even goes as far as giving a guideline on how long ot run it based on how long you've been driving and the type of driving from memory.. if i had the book in the house i'd quote it.

i'm interested as i beleive it prolongs, the life of the turbo.. what was the mechanic's reasoning for it not being needed?

So he can rebuild yours when it cooks after you've been pulling 120kph from Sydney to Albury.

I can't remember the exact reason that he said you don't need them but I will be seeing him on Monday night at the club so i will ask him again then.

I cannot think of a single turbo engine that would not benfit from suitable idle time, by suitable I mean if you pull into the servo off the express way where you have been doing 110kph towing your trailer, be kind and slow down before the exit, dont drive it hard going into the servo, let it idle while you get out, get your walllet out etc, then shut it down.

if you have driven through the suberbs to your house at 40kph, light load, idle up drive way, put in shed etc, 20 second is heaps of time.

All you are trying to do is allow the turbo to slow to its minimum speed allow some of the heat in the turbo to be taken away by the coolant, oil and atmosphere. at idle the turbine is going quite slow, but will still take around 5-6 second to stop, I timed it on my BA and BF Falcon. if you trun off the engine at high speed or load, the turbo can be spinning up to 300,000 rpm, and will run on for some time, without oil. not good.

We run hundeds of deisel engines at work, from 100hp gensets to 2000hp truck and loaders, they all have idle timers, and are used at all times other than after idleing into the workshop or in an emergency situation.

No oil and heat will kill your turbo quick smart, if you dont fit a timer, be prepaired to allow at least 30 second to idle down after normal driving, and more like 1 min after a highway into servo type situations.

But remember, driving around a shopping center looking for a parking spot, ot idleing into a bottle shop from the road all takes time and is when the engine is under very low load and at low speed and all gos towards your idle down time.

                Re: Turbo Timer

                I agree with the above.

A very good timer that fits nicely in prados is available from http://www.newpro-tech.com.au/
Not sure if the switch holes in the 150 are the same as the 120. (surely they must be)

There light switches are very nice as well. I bought some gear off them and lost some of the parts in the packing, when my wife threw them out. He offered to send replacement for free.
Seems a good bloke to me.
