  • how hard to change the thermostat

    G'day all

I have been doing some searching and cant really find what i'm after.. How hard is it to change the thermostat on a '04 120 diesel?
I know the thermostat is on the bottom hose, so i assume you have to remove all the bash plates and drain the entire system, but am not sure where to go from there... Thought if i could do it myself i'd probably save a few hundred $$$$

    Any info would be appreciated

    Cheers

Re: how hard to change the thermostat

HUGE thanks to 'Rainman' for emailing me the instructions for changing the termostat.. I couldnt have done it without the email you sent, thanks Chris

Oh and for anyone thinking of changing the thermostat themselves, have a good look where it is before you make the decision to go ahead! Another interesting thing, everyone lists a 56mm thermostat, yet i pulled a 60mm out. In the end i plucked up the courage to fit the 56mm and it appears to work and not leak, however not sure why there was a 60mm in there. 4 aftermarket brands only list a 56mm.

A lot of Toyotas have a seal that fits around the thermostat not sure in this case but if so the thermostat may have been replaced previously to compensate the 4mm gap between housing and thermostat and was luck that the housing gasket held water tight .

Yeah fish with the black rubber seal fitted to the thermostat, it sat flush in the hole, (quite tight actually) however the measurements were taken with the rubber seal removed. The other interesting thing that i noticed is that there was no gasket or sealant used when the aftermarket thermosat was fitted (60mm) because it fit so tight...

Needless to say alot had to be used once the 56mm was fitted, nearly 600km later and it is not leaking at all so it appears it might work!

The test will be next week when i have to tow a car to bathurst for easter!
