Sorry if this is a Really Dumb Question - when I was looking around before buying my 08 Standard diesel (D-4D), one dealer said that you shouldn't keep topping up the big tanks because the fuel at the bottom that doesn't get used can "go off", and even get bacteria and things growing in it. Is this for real, or some sort of urban myth? It sounds pretty far-fetched to me, but I've never had anything to do with diesel engines before. Apart from that, I would have thought that the fuel was taken up from the lowest point in the 2 tanks anyway, which would mean the oldest fuel gets used first - is that the case, or does it get pumped from one tank to the other?

The Prado 120 diesel fuel tank system is continuously circulating diesel fuel between the tanks using an electric pump venturi system and the main fuel pump return fuel system via a fuel cooler. It is advisable to keep diesel fuel tanks topped up, particularly in humid/ tropical climates to limit viod spaces above the fuel and subsequent condensation build up which will lead to microbiological growth on oil/water interface called Cladosporium Resinae. From my experiance the most severe contamination has come from old diesel fuel storage drums/ containers not drained of water, I have seen massive cases of microbiological contamination in boat and ships tanks not properly maintained.
The Prado 120 diesel fuel system design will not allow any build up of stale fuel and should minimise contamination as Common Rail fuel pumps hate it, strewth sorry about the long winded reply.07 Upgrade GXL D4D, Manual, Dune,Sov Bar, BFG's, SG11, Redark dual Batts, Extensive Aux wiring, Stebel, LED stop tails, IPF HID's (my mod), 240V Inv, ARB Comp, GME UHF,TPMS, Safari snorkel, GPS,Hilux washers, 40l Engel in 30% pas pos, homemade A/C cond protection plate, polyairs.

Re: Diesel fuel going stale?
Many thanks Clifton, for that very complete explanation. I will now be completely comfortable topping up the tanks!
Cheers
