  • Fitting Safari snorkel head backwards

    Hi all

I am currently in Tassie and frequently run into swarms of bees and white moths. I got sick of these being ingested into the air box via the snorkel, so turned the head around. The effect is that I now don't ingest insects but do hear more induction noise (with the window down).
Interestingly enough, my fuel economy hasn't altered to any noticeable degree either up or down.
Because it looks "wierd", I will probably turn it back around when the insects disappear.
So much for the increased performance due to "ram air" effect.
    Anyone got any comments?

    Cheers - John

yeah I think the ram air affect is a furphy - by the time it makes it down through all that tubing and though the air filter any effect would have dissapated.

There's a couple of options to prevent the insects getting in. ( besides turning the head round ).

    1. those oiled foam socks that Unifilter make you can put over the ram head - I tried one works Ok. About $20. Pain in the proverbial cleaning and re-oiling it though.

    2. I now have a Donaldson pre-filter head I use on really dusty roads - that works well preventing all manner of nasties getting to the airfilter box. Real quick to clean out too -just undo one screw on top and remove and empty it. Athough some say these degrade performance over certain speeds, I can't say I've noticed any with the D4-D. ( is a bit noisier though )
    Cheers, Wayne

I remember reading an article many years ago in Street Machine (I think), and they calculated the volume of air entering a carby of a V8 doing a 1/4 mile. From memory it was only above something like 160mph that the air entering the bonnet scoop was actually as fast as the air being sucked into the engine..

The increased performance that has been measured in marketing papers fore snorkels is usually done on a dyno, so no ram effect is measured.

I was watching the Dakar race a week or so ago. I noticed it was very common for the snorkel heads to be on backwards.

to stop insects going into your snorkle is a very complicated and time consuming process so i hope you can all keep up with this temporary solution

          1 go to bunnings
          2 consume a sausage sandwitch
3 go into bunnings and purchase the following an off cut of fly screen approx 20cm x 20cm and 1 rubber band
4 place flyscreen over snorkle head and secure with rubber band (this is the hard bit)
5 admire your handy work and be comfortable in the fact that the scrap heap challange guys have nothing on your bodging skills
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Years ago got got into a locust plague with wife on the hay plains had an airtek snorkel, after emptying the airbox, got wifes pantyhose cutup and slipped over the snorkel head worked a treat.

Another reason to reverse the direction of the ram head is to reduce the intake of dust if travelling in a covery or dusty environment. This will help preserve the air filter which will increase fuel enconomy as the egine will not need to work has hard to get a breath of fresh air.

Insects are not the only problem.

                1. This has been covered before but: turning the head around will not stop dust going down into the airbox/filter. The dust particles are suspended in the air and the air will be drawn down into the engine via the airbox regardless of which way the snorkel is fitted. You will stop lumps of dirt, mud etc from flying straight down the hole though.

Having a snorkel simply raises the position of the air intake to a higher position where (hopefully) the air has a lesser amount of dust suspended in it, as opposed to the usual air intake position normally located between the fender and wheel arch position where the dust is super-concentrated.

                2. The "RAM" effect is a sham, unless you are driving at velocities in the 1000s of kilometres per hour. A normally aspirated engine can only consume so much air and this air is entering at normal atmospheric pressure. You can't force anymore in unless you then fit a supercharger or similar to "force" the air in under pressure. Most superchargers only run around 6 - 15psi (road going passenger cars). Driving at 200km/hr will still only throw the air down the snorkle at normal atmospheric pressure.

Snorkel beanies and pre-filters can help filter out some of this dust and bugs prior to the air cleaner.

Yep it sure was, and would you believe it, when I got to Denny I was using one of those brush come sponge thingos to clean the windscreen with heaps of aqua pura all the rubber scrapper did was smear, but guess what, I used the other half of the panty hose with more aqua pura to clean the screen so I could at least see through it. Come to think of it, it was after similar weather that our southern mates have just experienced, I hope they can keep check on those locust plagues this year

In my old army days it was common for old sergeants and other wise men to say "If you want to stop blisters, put pantyhose or nylon stockings onto your feet before you put your socks and boots on."

It never made any difference to me. I think they were just kinky.
