  • A/C not working

    Hi All,

Does anyone know if you need the condensor fan to be connected for the air cond system to work??

I have just got a 2003 GX TD which the a/c isnt working on and I notice that the electric fan that is supposed to be on the front of the a/c condensor is not there....
    :?
    Cheers

    Re: A/C not working

I think the fan in front of the condensor is for climate control A/C models. I was camping on the weekend with friends with a 11/05 120 GXL that didn't have the fan and was also only a dial control system on the dash not LCD display where our 120 has the fan and climate control.

Another crazy idea....The guy I am buying this 2003 GX from has only given me the "Valet key" I think at this stage....will the A/C work with the Valet ket only and not the normal 1??

      Just an idea...

        Re: A/C not working

the air cond on the gx should work straight away(especially if not the climate control variant).if it is not even bringing in the compressor then it could be a gas problem and be held out on the low pressure switch.

start by confirming the compressor is coming in,if so then possiblyt short of gas and will require the leak to be found and repaired...

            Re: A/C not working

Hey Wes, thanks for the input. I have power through the high/low pressure switch, gas in system and compressor not cutting in.

Might have to find a auto lecy to have a look at it.

            Any more suggestions anyone??

            Cheers

yeah the fact that he is only giving you the valet key and the aircon does not work, maybe check it is not pinched

But seriously i know this may be a dumb one can the rest of the car run without the AC belt it may have snapped and falled out
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further

Check the fuse in cab labelled IG1 no2.
                It switches the condenser.

                  Re: A/C not working

                  Hi haycait,

You wrote you had power through the pressure switch, this is probably your problem.
Looking at the automatic trans version, the wiring diagram shows 2 pressure switches, a high and a low.
Both are wired in parallel and have 12V behind them. It would then seem that if either switch switches
12V through to the aircon computer it will shut down. Are you sure the system is not low on gas?

Also later models with climate control appear to have three pressure switches, there is a single unit,
a dual unit and one for the condensor fan. It appears the condensor fan on these models only runs
when the gas pressure exceeds a certain pressure.

                  Cheers

                    Re: A/C not working

Another option is that the AC may believe that the engine water temperature is too high. On the 90 series at least there is a water temperature sensor that cuts power to the compressor if a certain temperature is exceeded. Whilst I'm not suggestion you have an overheating engine, you may however have a faulty sensor.

                        Re: A/C not working

Well after a bit of playing I have found that the a/c works once the engine heats up a bit and cuts out again when it gets higher in temp. So I am guessi ng the temp sender thing is sounding quite likely. Would a toyota dealer be able to test this or would I be better to go to an auto leccy??

                        Cheers

                          Re: A/C not working

                          a 3rd option is an A/C place.

What I found with these type of problems is that it is well worth phoning around to find someone that understands whats happening & are familiar with the symptoms you have because it kinda crosses over between a few areas.

The A/C place may have experience with this type of issue & be able to order & fit the part.
An auto electrician may also be able to do that but they would need to know how it effects the operation of the compressor.

Toyota may be able to diagnose it too, but you may find you may have to do all the ground work for them.

If you can locate the sensor, & how it works (normally open or normally closed) you could bypass it your self to confirm that this is the issue.

Lastly, you must also remember that the sensor may infact not be faulty & is infact reading the temperature accurately. On the 90 series I have had the engine warm enough to turn the A/C off. The gauge was reading about 3/4 which is over 1/4 higher than it normally reads (just below 1/2). I assume your temperature gauge is still below 1/2 when it cuts out?

                          Cheers
