  • The light that dare not speak it's name - Roo-Lite

OK, I've searched on this topic and not found a lot.

I have noticed that when threads talk about spotlights they invariably go down the IPF, Lightforce route and most people fall into these camps.

Looking at the build-up threads and various pictures scattered throughout the forum I see some photos of rigs with these lights on them. How come they rarely seem to be mentioned?

I was in at a local store and noticed several Roo-Lites amongst the IPF, Lightforce and Hella lamps that were on display, the prices were generally a few $ under the other lights. Does no-one mention these because they are rubbish or what?

Are there any PP folks who have been using them for a while? If so what is your feedback?

    :?: :?: :?:

    Cheers OGG

    Old Grey

I have installed the Roo Lights up front a delux ARB Bar and thought I would have a crack at installing myself. After purchase I was reading through the 4WD Action magazine and they didnt rate them highly at all in the comparo. I had no trouble fitting them and when I spoke to the retail outlet I purchased them from(over in the way old west) he mentioned that they were up there with Lightforce. I purchased them for a few reasons, #1 being cost to start with. They come with their own wiring harness and took me around 4 hrs to install fully. Hardest part was pushing the feed through the firewall rubber grommet to pick up the high beam. #2 they are manufactured similar to that of electrical equipment, same warehouse differnt brand name.(so I was told) There marketing budget is not as extensive as lightforce I suspect. I only have the Halogen globe and could not bring myself to the cost of HID. If i was on the road more afterdark then possibly another brand name light may have been a thought. I have been a little lazy and not tightened the lights themselves fully and when I need to use them in the middle of nowhere trying to find the usual camp spot in total darkness they were higlighting the moon rather than the road??? My fault though!!!
    I paid $265 just before Xmas 09
    Hope that helps
    Thanks

If you're wondering why the Roo-Lite looks like the Lightforce it's because the Roo-Lite designer used to work for Lightforce and gets the Roo-Lites made in China

I have had the Roo Lite 220 Halogen for 6 months or so. cost me $265 from an ebay store. They fit on the ARB Deluxe bar quite nicely as they are not quite as big as the Lightforce 240. They do have the wiring kit included which also saves some money.
They are quite Ok for my needs, but then I hardly do any driving at night ( which is part of the reason I didn't fork out for Lightforce ).
The light output is nothing you'd go "WOW" about but I haven't been inside a car with Lighforce on.
The vibrate a bit on the ARB bar and I hate shaky light beams. I glued some half inch rubber blocks to the top rail of the bar and these wedge against the top of the light - problem fixed.

Not meaning to hijack the thread,

but ozwapet2, just wanted to let you know that the included harnesses are not that flash and the wiring used is usually quite thin. If you beef up the wires running from the battery to the relay, and then from the relay to the lights. The performance increase is very noticable and you might get some "wow" factor out of your roo lights. I did, i reckon that the lights are twice what they were when compared to the harness that I was supplied through an ebay shop.

          Cheers,

          Wil

OGG, you may have seen my "wanted" post for new lights as i have a set of roo lites, 0n a recent trip to rocky i went through a heap of water and the lights got water in them and melted the fuse and every time it rains they get moisture in them, so time for some new one's and they won't be roo lites, that is my two cents!!!

                Hutch,

Yes, thanks for the feedback, I have the ARB bar and I think the Lightforce 240s are just a bit too big and the 170s just a bit too small (there is a line for a bear somewhere in there).

I may end up with the IPFs yet, but my brother is coming over on the weekend and he has a set of 240s on his truck, we may be playing around with sizes.

I just wanted to see any tales about these lights as it seems that they are around but no-one seems game to mention that they have them on their rig, hence the Oscar Wilde type title on the thread.

                Cheers OGG

I have the cibie super oscars converted to HID on the toyota bar. Fit well and light output is fantastic.

Re: The light that dare not speak it's name - Roo-Lite

I have just joined the RooLite club having just bought a 180XP for a smidgen under $200 and installed it myself using the supplied wiring harness. We only do night time country driving because we happen to leave a bit later and just getting caught not arriving at our destination before sunset. So I didn't think it was justified to get Lightforce 170s. Hopefully I have made the right decision.

I had to change the ring terminal for the cable that connects to the battery's +ve terminal from a 6mm to an 8mm. I'm yet to push the cable through the firewall but in the meantime, the switch is in the engine bay with a plastic bag around it to keep it dry. When I've got some extra time, I'll pull the cable through the grommet in the firewall. I've also bought the Narva 63026BL spotlight rocker switch in preparation for this. The supplied switch was pretty big. Now I just need to find some time to go out late in the night to align the lights.

Other things I had to buy were a pack of 6 Scotchlocks (1 was supplied in the kit) just in case I chose the wrong high beam wire and a 3m length of small split tubing to protect the cables running to the switch. Oh, and I also needed a secondhand TJM highloop nudgebar which I bought off ebay.

While searching through ebay, I also not that blue and yellow covers in spot or spread are available.

I've had the 180mm lights for a while now. For something to do, I put a 55watt HID kit in, it's made a bit of a difference all right. This is 2.30pm on an overcast day in my garage. Don't have any worthwhile "before" shots, but they certainly throw out more light and a good distance further.

                          Hi Snowy,

I am trying to find a HID conversion kit for the 220 roo lites and i came across one the had billet alloy adaptors, are these required? Where did you get your HID Kit from? and what colour range did you end up going with 4500K,6000k etc.

                          Cheers Rhys

Mate, I got mine from Predator Performance, not the cheapest around, but it all fitted well and works great. http://www.predatorparts.com and he has an E-bay shop as well. Shane I think his name is, located in Brisvegas.

The kit has everything you need (except whats below on the connectors) alloy billets and the HID kit itself, pop rivets the whole lot. I got 4300K which is plenty white enough, no need for the trendy blue covers anymore I did get extension cables that I did not need in the end either.

I am an electrical numpty and did it okay. Used the Roolite loom, just change the Roolite connections with some connectors from Jaycar.

Your 220mm should come up pretty wicked.
