  • D-4D engine catastrophic failures - any??

    Hi all,

Apologies for not using 'search' for any of this, but ....

We (in the UK) have had a couple of 120 series (Prado) with 3.0 D-4D motors go bang recently with relatively low mileage. Some of the guys are understandably very concerned about the longevity of their expensive trucks. :? I'm looking for any similar incidents you may have experienced or be aware of?

There is a lot of stuff surfacing that seems to be related to problems with injector seals, and also problems with sludge in the sump blocking the oil pickup pipe, and the engine being starved of oil flow. You're happily driving along when suddenly the oil light comes on then the motor seizes 8O Bang - game over ...

I recall a while back that guys on the South African HiLux forum were unhappy with noisy injectors - there may be some form of relationship here, but that is tenuous at the moment. Same for the Injector rattle here on PP.

Some of the guys have now stripped out the injectors and replaced the copper washers with the new aluminium ones, and replaced o-rings at the same time. This solves the leaking seal problem. Toyota Ireland seem to be doing this for their clients free, Toyota UK won't admit a fault. Go figure ... Remember also that the UK got the D-4D back in 2002-ish so possibly the earlier faults were resolved by the time you got them in Aus?

At the same time there is evidence of carbon deposits in the intake manifold and there are other oil passages that need cleaning due to sludge build up. These are vehicles that are not abused and are serviced regularly!

I'm looking for any information of any similar issues in Sunny Oz on this - anecdotal or otherwise (although actual provable incidents would be best). We're not sure how we may want to use this, if at all, but we'd like to build up a bigger picture across users of these vehicle variants as close to world-wide as we can get. A similar post has appeared on LCCSA! It would be nice to know we're not alone in our concerns!

Many thanks for any input, guys. And for those that do their own servicing on D-4Ds, maybe drop the sump and clean the oil pickup next time  A word of advice I've had is not to ever jack up against the sump (as if! ), and if you bash it be very quick to get it fixed - there is not a lot of room between the sump and the oil pickup.

    Cheers

    Gary

Manythanks, Hutch - interesting reading, and the symptoms seem to be the same

Carbon build up in the intake is common to all diesels that run an EGR system no matter what make. Interesting though is the sludging issues, this is a real issue in modern engines due to the stress they put on their oil and the extended service intervals (for both diesel and petrol and seems more previlent in Euro engines)

Out of interest what are the oil change intervals in the Toyota service schedule over there?

The official interval is 10000 miles (approx 16k km) but most folk I know do an interim change as well. I'll pass on the info re carbonising - interesting stuff ..

          Cheers

16k km is a long interval (But quite common for Euro vehicles I know). Here in OZ it's 10k under normal conditions (mixed driving, no towing or heavy 4x4 work), under any other conditions it's 5k km oil changes (no filter, still only at 10k km).

Personally if I were you I'd at least be looking at dropping to 10k km services (oil and filter) and using the best oil you can afford (semi-synthetic at the least, if you don't want to stretch to the fully synthetic oils), I think this would go a long way to avoiding sludging issues.

Not sure of you roadworthy situation but over here we don't have polution checks on vehicles so some owners choose to disable their EGR system and also some fit oil catch cans to the crank case breather to stop the carbon build up in the intake. (the carbon is a mixture of oil and soot, the soot from the EGR system and the oil from the crank case breather)

Re: D-4D engine catastrophic failures - any??

I would go a step further and replace oil and filter at 5k intervals. Valvoline super diesel is good for the task, and cheap, and the oil filters for these D4D's are really cheap as well.

It only takes half an hour every 5k kms and very well worth it IMO. I did this religiously with my last vehicle, and it went 400,000kms without any trouble.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Hi Gary, I have found your old post here, My failure sounds identical to yours and is related to leaking injectors & clogged screen

Can you give me some more feedback on the FOC Toyota contact campaign in Europe & UK?

We need help on this in in OZ now.
