  • Dodgie Starter Solenoid

    Greetings all,

I have an 05 V6 petrol. About 3 to 4 mths ago, I noticed on the odd occasion, when the key was flicked, the starter would engage breifly then disengage, but the starter would continue to spin until the timer quit (about 4 sec). Like everthing in life, "I'll look at it on the weekend" Well, the free weekend has never come and the problem has gradually got worse. On average, the engine eventually starts after about 8 attampts.
The battery is fine (6 mths old)
Disconnecting the solenoid exciter wire and taking a separate lead directly from the battery +ve to the solenoid, results in the same symptoms as above.
Based on the above, I've concluded that the solenoid is stuffed. I've tried tracking one down thru Toyota and 6 auto electricians but they all have the same answer, available, but you've gotta wait about 3 weeks. A complete starter motor is on the shelf, but it's about $600 genuine.

    Any ideas please?

    Cheers Mark

    Re: Dodgie Starter Solenoid

I have a 1Kz and my solenoid went a few weeks ago. Mine was different in that I had no warning (I know this seems odd) but it just went click, then nothing. Mechanic shipped it off to be rebuilt but actually put a different reconditioned genuine unit in. He said the "rebuilders" mentioned the Prado starters (I'm not sure if this is only diesel or petrol as well) have this happen a lot due to the contacts not being big enough. They burnt out. My new one has larger contacts on it and should be better than another genuine one with small contacts on it apparently. I guess we'll see.

      Ozchild,

Not sure when things changed but there are two types of starter moter for the V6. A 1.6kw and a 2kw.

If you have the 1.6kw one then it has the conventional solenoid on top that can be removed (held with two bolts from the front). It may be worth taking it off and making sure the spring and plunger are free.

The 2kw version has a magnetic solenoid which is built into the casing and requires the whole thing to be dismantled.... may as well do a complete overhaul/change over unit on this type of starter motor as you have it completely apart anyway.

        Re: Dodgie Starter Solenoid

Had a similar problem with my previous 120.
It was the starer motor solenoid actuating pin that was jamming.
Replaced by an auto sparky under warranty, Toyota just athorised the bit that was faulty.
Note: This has been listed previously.
Sold the Prado. Now FJ Cruiser

          Gday Mick,

Thanks for your input. Going on what you described, I've got the 1.6. Anyway, I removed the starter last night, pulled it apart and gave it a good once over. Checked the solenoid, yoke etc then bingo, thought I spotted the problem. The pinion was sticky on the shaft. I cleaned and lubricated it, put it back together and woohoo...no bits left over! Back under the hoist, refitted and then the big test.......Buggar, still the same.
Oh well, looks like it's the 3 week wait option and in the mean time, when I want to take her out, it's under the bonnet to start her!

          Cheers Mark

            Update on the starter issue.

The problem has actually been traced to the pinion clutch/spragg bearing on the starter. It's a one-way bearing that grips in one direction(to start the engine) and slips in the other so that when the engine starts the poor ol' starter motor doesn't get the crap spun out of it! Anyway, it appears that the spragg bearing has failed, therefore creating a slip when the starter's engaged. Apparently, according to the auto sparky, it's a common problem with this style of starter. He's sent it off to a guy in Qld who rebuilds them for about $70. All up, about $90 and 4 days without the truck.

              Re: Dodgie Starter Solenoid

Got the pinion back yesterday. You can see signs of work that has been carried out on it. Anyway, fitted it back onto the starter, cleaned and relubed and fitted it back in. Bingo, like a new one. End up costing $88. I didn't get the name of the Qld business that did the repair but apparently it's quite well known, but who cares, the important thing is that I didn't have to fork out $395(cheapest price for a new Denso starter) for a newby. Incidentally, this crowd also carry replacement solenoids and brush sets.
