  • Dual Battery set up ! Which one to get ????

Need help!! I have an 08 Grande D4D and want to install a dual battery system. Piranaha seems to be the best . But local 4X4 bloke wants to install a 12V DC-DC Charger instead . Can anyone help and show pics of there set up. I like the idea of mounting on passanger side to leave room for Air compressor .... any help will be appreciated

    Cheers Javard

    Javard,
With a D4D you really do need a DC-DC boost charger to fully charge the aux. battery in a reasonable time period - forget the Piranaha or any other solenoid based system.
If it is an under bonnet instalaltion you want then your options are Redarc, Ctek or Stirling. For an in cab installation then Ranox is also an option.
There are numerous threads discussing the merits of each of the different chargers with installation pictures - Just use the search function.

Re: Dual Battery set up ! Which one to get ????

Lots of people have already posted before on the same matter and lots have posted their solutions as well.

Have a look at some of the following:
        http://pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?...532d983f4d1675
        http://pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?...532d983f4d1675
        http://pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?...532d983f4d1675
http://pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?...532d983f4d1675 (just in there as reference for the older oilers)

If you also look through the build threads at the other 07, 08 or 09 diesels then you will see various solutions posted.

With the newer Diesels the charge rate from the alternator is lower than the older diesels so s straight out battery isolator or smart isolator will not be pushiong a high enough voltage through so the best alternative into proloning the life of yourbattery is to use a DC to DC charger to bost from the alternator voltage upto an acceptable voltage rate for the battery to be charged at.

EDIT: Submitted this a while back but looks like Leachy had already posted and mine got held up. Anyway the links could be useful despite having some technical jargon in them

A lot of the solutions mount on the drivers side with a big battery but those that have mounted on the passenger side quite often use the ARB battery tray. I have mine on drivers side and room for the air compressor on the passengers side.

Re: Dual Battery set up ! Which one to get ????

A quick question on dual battery set ups.

I have done a bit of reading through the forum and there are numerous mentions of the D4D alternator not pumping out enough volts to adequatly charge an aux battery. Is there any issue with the 120 series V6 motor in this regard (I have a 2006 auto V6)?

I have a projecta solinoid system, but mine is the 100amp model and I see that when people talk about the projecta system on here they generally have the 150amp. Is the 100amp model not suitable for the prado?

          cheers,

          Wil

Re: Dual Battery set up ! Which one to get ????

            Wil,

The V6 should not have issues with low charge voltage, it is just a D4D issue.
If you are just using the Aux. battery for low power devices (fridge, lights etc.) then the 100Amp solenoid should be fine.
If you want to use the solenoid to parrallel the start and Aux. batteries for winching or emergency starting then you will need a higher rated solenoid.

              Thanks Leachy,

I think that I will leave it as it is.

              Cheers,

Re: Dual Battery set up ! Which one to get ????

I emailed Baintech to find out if the Ctek d250s is suitable for under bonnet installation. There response was "No is not recommended to mount in the engine bay at all". Pretty clear I thought!

A pity because it, like the Ranox has output reduction for increased battery temperature which I gather is pretty important to avoid cooking the battery when things heat up. As far as I can tell, the Redarc doesn't have this feature. I've emailed Redarc about this, but no response yet.

I got a reply from Redarc today about it's BCDC 1220. They confirmed there is no temperature probe, but it does manage output to the battery according it's ambient temperature for itsown self preservation. This goes someway to protecting the battery as long as it's installed near the battery and is subjected to similar temperatures. They confirmed it is definitely designed for under bonnet installation

Derek is a member here and very helpful. I have one of his dual battery kits, it took a couple of hours to install with detailed instructions. I also called and got some assistance over the phone.

                        I run the Redarc.

The start button on the dash to start from the Aux battery is great
Especially when your original battery drops a cell out of the blue after 5 1/2 years
