  • Mr Minit ruined my key module

    Hi,

I am in a real bind right now. Took the prado key to mister minit to have the casing replaced and new key cut. He damaged the module in the process and now because I dont have a working module or a master key (I only have the sub key) I have been told that it is going to cost me about 1,000 to repalce the engine ecu and 400 for a new key to programme into the new ecu  . Has anyone had any success in flushing the ecu so that I will only need to replace the key. Any advice will be appreciated, we brought the car second hand so that is why we dont have the master key. I now hate the incompetent Mr Minit guy.

    Regards Eli

You should be kicking yourself as well I would think. Mr Minute isn't the sort of place that I would get that sort of work done. Having said that... the MM guy should have refused to try the work, if he was not confident in his skills. A proper locksmith that is experienced with these annoying keys would be a good start I think. I am presently trying to source a reasonable inexpensive solution to a similar problem as you. Bought the Prado SH with only one key.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

Davros, you are soooo right, I was kicking myself. I didnt think that undoing a tiny screw, dropping out the module and placing into a toyota genuine case (which they have) would be to difficult. Anyway, I found a very clever fellow who was able to fix the module, he used conductive glue to repair the area damaged and voila, the module is in the new case and is working fine . I will be getting another key with a module though while this one in working so that I wont have the issue of ever replacing the engine ecu.

      Cheers Eli

That's very advisable - get it down there so they can read the key ASAP, being an electronics tech I can tell you that repair may only be temporary.

if the seller can only supply one key, I reckon it's a good reason to ask for a healthy discount off the price of the vehicle ( to the price of a genuine Toyota replacement key and programming )
        Cheers, Wayne

If you already have the new key a locksmith with a programer will be able to just cut and program the key for you. And as for the cost programing should be about $165 -187 plus cutting the key.

                Hi Eli,

Sorry to hear about your dilemma.
For the future, outside of a basic house key, never use Mr Minit. I've had 2 bad experiences with specialised keys using Mr Minit.

I replaced my 2 broken Prado key shells the other day. I purchaced them from Ebay and they cost me $19 (for 2) landed. Another $13 to have them cut, placed the internals of the old into the new, bingo! 2 new keys at a fraction of the cost of genuines. Prior to this, I was given prices ranging from $55 thru to $90 for a shell. The more expensive retailers did include key cutting and a new battery for the internals. Even so, still very expensive.

                Cheers Mark

Any chance you can post a link to the ebay seller?

                    Hi Nick,

                    Try this

                    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/TOYOTA-REMOTE-CA ... dZViewItem

Search on the seller and it will drag up all sorts of deals. He's currently flogging 10 shells for $79, free post. Just make sure the profile of the key is the same prior to committing.

                    Cheers Mark

Did you have yours cut at a particular type of place, i am guessing not at the local hardware store!

Re: Mr Minit ruined my key module

I got mine cut at Buffalo Locksmiths in Sydney. A long from home for you, point being that they're a proper Locksmith, not a key cutting/ boot mending franchise. You might pay 50c more to get the key cut but at least you know you're getting a good result. The other plus with a good locksmith is you can give them the key code (if you have it) and they'll cut the key to it's original shape, where as copying a well used key, will give you a new key, but possibly with the well used, worn shape of the original that you copied, if you get my drift! Keys wear quicker than the barrel.

                        Cheers Mark

Sorry to hear about what happenend...

Our master key shaft broke from its plastic casing. We got another blank from ebay. Once cut worked fine and the transponder fitted is what is needed for the ECU to fire up the engine. I went to a specialist locksmith and asked them about your situation, thier responce was that maybe by having your second key in the ignition with it on for an hour or two may reset to ECU?

Hope this helps, but as I said, we got the key from ebay for about $20 posted. All it is, is the key shaft/remote case, all you need to do is get it cut without the transponder in, then fit the remote and try it in the ignition.

                          Cheers.

Just got mine yesterday. Came in three weeks from Hong Kong.

I have bought plenty of stuff from Hong Kong and it always takes ages to turn up.
