  • Fitting UHF radio

    G'Day All
    Can anybody help me with the following - can UHF radio be run from accessory plug outlets?
    If not how can they be fitted / wired up without pulling everything to pieces and boring holes in things?
    How is aerial wire routed to inside without the same.
    It's probably obvious I am bit of a novice at the caper!
    I have 09,GXL D4d.

    i have my uhf power coming from the power socket, that way it's turned off with the ignition

        A typical 5W UHF radio will use less than 2A of current at 12V, so a ciggie lighter (or accessory) socket is just fine.

        I recently wired up a GME 3440 - the first one for me. It was a piece of cake...

        I started with the antenna, clamped onto my bullbar. Then a cable via the engine bay through the rubber grommet on the driver's side of the firewall. I used a bit of conduit to cover the cable outside from the bullbar into the engine bay - this was to give it some protection against UV rays etc. All cabling was secured with... err... cable ties.

        I actually wired my power direct to the battery, so if there's an emeregency etc the radio can be used without car keys handy (something GME suggested in the manual). The catch here of course is that you can leave the radio on accidentally, which I did the other night. Because of the low current consumption the car started as usual the next morning. Now I'm more vigilant turning it off though...!

        All up it took probably about two hours (and two beers) and was a pretty good learning experience. ARB, for example, charge $160 for fitting a UHF.... That's about four slabs of beer ferchissakes...!!!

        BTW, to get cables through the firewall I use a straight length of metal coat hanger (about 30cm+). I tape the cable to the length of coathanger and push it though the firewall grommet in the engine bay and the pull it in from the inside. Works a treat - and gets rid of a shitty coat hanger at the same time.

            G'day GXL-800x,
            Not familiar with the GME 3440, but I have an older GME with remote head (can't remember model number) which have mounted as follows:

            Main box in glove box, in small area above main glove box (box drops down for easy access with removal of a couple of screws).
            Remote head is in opening in front of gear shift and screwed upward in to dash so screw holes are not visible if removed. Mike mount is screwed to front of ashtray. Power is bought through from main unit straight into the cig lighter. I have mounted a remote speaker under the passenger seat.
            Aerial cable runs from aerial into plastic cover on the back of my sovereign bar at the top, and then back out at the bottom (not sure what bar you have?) then into engine bay. All exposed cable has 8mm cableshield and is secured with cable ties. I've gone through a plastic bung in the firewall right behind the glovebox, and resealed it with a bit of black silicon.
            I now have a fully functional unit, but easily removeable, and with the purchase of a replacement ashtray from the wreckers at minimal cost, you wouldn't know it had ever been there. I can shoot through some photos if you want them, just let me know. Cheers, Mike

              I have my UHF velcroed vertically to the centre console on the passenger side. ( beside the gear stick ). Heavy duty velcro works a treat and never given way. No holes need to be drilled, also means I can easily remove the UHF for security etc. I just push the antenna and power cables up into the gap between the carpet and the centre console bottom edge.

              Although it's possible to run it from the cigarette lighter socket, I'd still recommend powering it direct from the battery with 4mm or better twin cable. The transmitters in these radios ( it draws most power on transmit ) can be sensitive when it comes to voltage and may reduce your transmit power or generate distorted signals. Also, most likely there'll be times you'll need to listen out for calls while parked in camp etc, and want to take your key out. You do need remember to switch the UHF off overnight ( unless you have a second battery ) but on receive mode only it won't drain your battery too much.
