  • Actual Fuel and Cruising Range Read out

    Hi Guys

First post on this forum I have had a bit of a look around and must say some good info and good people about. Hi to you all

I have a VX D4D delivered in December. My first Toyota though not 4wd. Have had Jackeroos and a beach basher Nissan Navara in the past. This is my first Diesel though. Jury still out on that one.

Anyway to the question at hand. When the Crusing range read out says 0, I can only get 130 litres into the tank. The fuel light has only just come on.
When the the territory my wife drives says zero, the tank is empty. In fact you can may get 5km. I found out the hard way.

Is the missing 20 litres just incase? I gather it is in there and useable but without taking the risk of running out of fuel, I will never know. With the consumption I have been getting (ave 10l / 100kmI) I expect 1500 km range but have not pushed to far.

Is anyone else having the same experience.

    Regards Brendon

While I have never run the car that low (never like to especially with a diesel) when I fill up the consumed fuel normally quotes out to about that amount being held in reserve.

At 10l/100km thats a very healty reserve of 200kms!!!

As a good rule of thumb I would agree with leaving that amount in the tank anyway to avoid picking up the dregs!!

Re: Actual Fuel and Cruising Range Read out

It is very normal to have a margin between when the trip computer says 0km to empty and the actual amount although 20l seems like a large margin.

In my Pajero there was about 10 liters left. In my BA falcon I have done 130km after the computer said 0.
      Thanks,

Have this issue myself. I am getting an average of 8.1 l/100km in my 150 GXL TD which I think should give me a cruising range of a little over 1800km Trip Computer shown only around 1400km

Is there something drastically wrong with my math?

I would not worry about "picking up the dregs" as the fuel comes from the bottom of the tank anyway, either full or empty, there is a "swirl bowl" which holds a small amount of fuel, usually about 2 liters, so the pick-up wont ever be out of fuel under cornering etc, but the dreg and water etc will be at to lowest point, where the fuel is picked up from.

I run my Ute (twin tanked HDJ79R) out to empty on each tank every time so there is no build up, trust your filters and buy good fuel, but with the prado not being able to choose seperate tanks, running to empty means a jerry can.

No nothing wrong with the maths. They must just build in a large margin for error.

Not to mention running a diesel dry is supposed to be a big 'no-no'!

Re: Actual Fuel and Cruising Range Read out

They factor in a larger margin for error due to the CRD characteristics

it is not just "dont run out of diesel otherwise you gotta bleed it" and sludge scenario but also the fact that they run ultra high fuel pressures which cuases the fuel to heat up, underrneath you will see 1 or sometimes 2 fuel coolers on the return line

so the less amount of fuel in the system the less there is for heatsoak which means more rapid heating/cooling cycling which is not desirable

keep at least 20 litres in and no worries, unless you are not planning on keepin the car for more than a few years and couldnt care about long term issues

                cheers

Re: Actual Fuel and Cruising Range Read out

I have almost 7,000 on the clock and found theToyota fuel economy guage to be a bit light. I also run a ScanGuage which agrees with the amount of fuel I put into the tank. I manully calculate the fuel economy each time I refuel. Example is the last fill up (1200kms) where the in dash display said 9.6 l/100k since last fill up but the actial was 10.4 (based on the odometer and fuel pump reading). The ScanGuage agreed with this calculation.

I also find a great differance in travelling lots of short trips, city and highway driving. The best I have seen was 8.2 (400kms) and the worst being 13.5 (the missus in the city).

Ever wonder why the distance to empty never seems to be more than 1300kms (accordings to the in dash guage)?

I woudl appreciate any advice on how to fix the errors in the odometer. Speedometer is very good (shows 99, actual 100) but the odometer reads slow (travel 100kms, odometer dispays 86kms). this will probably fix the fuel economy numbers.

I have an auto diesel GXL fitted with BFG (265/70/17), Bilstein / King lift kit.

                    Hi Nifty

I get the same issue with mine. The consumption on the car for since fueling will show 9.4 l/100km. But when it is calculated with actual fuel put in and km from the odometer, it will be above 10. The first tank was exact, the rest have been out by upto 10%.

BTW D4D VX done about 7.5k and the total calculated consumption is 10.32 l/100km. The car has always shown well under 10 at each refill.

                    Cheers

                      Hi Guys,
First post so I hope i'm on the right thread for the question i'm about to ask? I picked up my 150 diesel auto in December went straight to my friendly Bridgestone dealer and fitted 265/70/17 Micky Thompson Baga Mtz's, love the tyres. But my indash fuel reading doesn't go under 12klms per 100. Can anyone tell me if it because it's because the tyres are larger than STD and the calabration is out or something different. All you guys seem to be getting way better fuel ecomomy than what i'm getting. Need some ammo before I go back to Toyota on my 10K service.
                      Cheers

James, use the tyre size difference comparison at http://www.exploroz.com/vehicle/tyres/sizecalc.aspx Compare the two tyres sizes - originals vs MTZs. The calcs will show the variance on your speedometer readings and diameter. Divide the increase in diameter by the original diameter to get your % increase and multiply that by the kilometres travelled when you fill up and divide by the litres filled. That will give you the corrected consumption.

Assuming you have the GXL (std 265/65/17) the increase will mean when your speedo reads 100km/hr you're actually at 103.3 km/hr. The orig diameter is 776.3mm, the MTZs 802.8mm, so an 13.25mm increase or 1.7068%, not a big difference.

this of course assumes your speedo was right in the first place.

40,000 next service and just back from a run Brisbane, Cairns and return. The best I got was 8.5 l/100ks (Rocky - Brisbane). Noticed that in heavy rain I lose about 1 l/100k. The indash economy meter reads about 1 l/100kms better than actual wich makes you feel better. I use the Scangauge III which agrees with the amount of fuel I can get into the car (when it stops bubbling up the spout) and these are the stats I have given in this posting.

I have a winch/bar, lift kit and changed the tyres to 265/70/17 (BFG) which has cost me between 1 and 2 l/100kms which is probably fair enough. I noticed that if I can keep the speed to about 95kms/hr or under the fuel economy is very good (under 9 l/100ks), at 100kmh not as good (under 10 l/100kms) and at 110kms/hr it drops to about 11 l/100kms. City driving I get about 10 l/100kms and my wife gets about 12 l/100kms (and she gets up me for leaving a light on due to the extra power used).

I notice that I use much more fuel until the water temp reaches operating temps (85 to 90 deg C).

I recommend a scangauage if you want real figures.

                              Regards,
