  • Fitting a cruise control into a 2003 GX?

    G'day all

I have a service manual (CD) on order at the moment, so I may be able to answer this question myself in a week or two, but...

Can you fit a (toyota) cruise control to the early GX models that didn't come with one? I have an '03 GX 4 litre petrol, 5 speed manual.
I have previously fitted cruise to a car that was designed to have it (in one of the various models), but didn't. All of the wiring was there, it was a case of fitting up the control switch, actuator, a relay and the control module.

Things should be even simpler on the prado because of electronic throttle control and the fact that the computer is already wired up to the speed sensor and controls the throttle.

I have the 'basic' steering wheel (vinyl as opposed to leather), but it still has ports in the side to attach the extras and the rotating ring for the airbag/horn/etc has a big plug in it that only has the horn wire in it at present, but one assumes it could also take the cruise control wiring (not to mention radio controls).

Any ideas? Anyone ever done this? Aftermarket cruise controls that can do electronically controlled throttles cost a bomb ($500-800 or so), and I can't even find one in Aus. So depending on the cost, I figured it would be smarter to get the bits from Toyota (or a wrecker) and fit the Toyota genuine parts if possible.

    Cheers

Just a guess but I would expect the $500 - $800 for after market would be nothing compared to a genuine Toyota cruise control, assuming it can even be retro fitted.

        The story so far...

OK, So I got the CD manual (which is a piece of garbage, IMHO, the Nissan service manuals excrete all over this from a great height).

It shows that the cruise control is handled by the engine management computer (no surprise there), with inputs from a few bits and bobs. The only extras I could see were a clutch switch (for the M/T version, which mine is) and the cruise control combination switch.

I ring up Toyota and get a price on the C/C combination switch. $1049 (!!!) "The most expensive combination switch I have ever quoted" says the chap. I have a sneaking suspicion that Toyota does that to stop people fitting C/C themselves (??). I went and bought one at Tony's in Midvale. Cost me $80. I have now plugged it into the steering wheel and I can get the "CRUISE" light to light up in the dash when I press the button.

BUT! The cruise won't engage. I will pull out my rubbishy toyota service manual again and have a look, but my suspicions are as follows:
        1. Clutch switch isn't fitted and so the circuit is open (if it disarms the cruise on an open circuit... not sure about that) and cruise won't engage
        2. Brake switch, ditto (but I think that this is already wired into the engine management computer by default)
        3. Some other problem, possibly to do with not having ABS and thus sensors on the wheels (although I can't understand that, every other cruise control in the world operates off the vehicle's speed signal from the gearbox).

I will check into it further and report back. Total cost so far is about $120 for the manual and $80 for the cruise combo switch.

Hmmm, I have a GX which had aftermarket cruise when I bought it. It wasn't the right one so Toyota replaced it with a correct fly-by-wire model however they chose to take it to an independent outlet and get them to do it rather than doing anything themselves. The make is an Autron I believe and sits on the steering wheel rather than the annoying stick that some use.

There could be a number of reasons they chose to do this but it's possible that the Toyota GXL model isn't entirely compatible with the GX. Most GXL drivers complain about the OEM cruise control anyway - I'm happy with mine.

I had the dealer fit cruise from new to my 2006 GX and they chose to install an after market (Autron) system. The cost was $587 fitted - perhaps this was cheaper than the outrageously priced Toyota C/C combination switch or maybe there is a technical reason why the Prado Cruise doesn't plug straight into a GX.
I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

Never had any issues with my OEM CC in the GXL. Usually within +-1km of setting except at the top of a hill (never had one that was). always 'lets go' when I touch the brake or cancel it with stalk. Always the best economy option and saved me a few speeding tickets I expect as well.

                WORKING

OK, so now I have the CC working. My initial hypothesis was correct, i.e. that an open circuit on the clutch switch caused the system to disallow a set of the cruise control. I hotwired it with a jumper, but I will order the real part from Toyota (assuming it doesn`t cost a million bucks).

The hard part was that the (useless) toyota manual doesn`t actually show you where all the parts are. Specifically, where does the clutch switch actually go? I assume it replaces the stop bolt on the frame for the clutch pedal, but who knows? The wiring was tucked up underneath the dash. It took a little while to find, but as soon as I did and fitted the jumper to it, boom I was in action.

I did actually look at a manual GXL at the wreckers today (BTW for all Perth people, Tony`s has 120 series prados like they are going out of style... just don`t look for any airbag parts or straight bumpers ahhahaha). I didn`t see anything obvious for the clutch switch, although I couldn´t look too closely, what with broken glass on the floor and all.

Anyhow, success is the story and all you need is:
                1. cruise control comb switch (80 bucks)
                2. clutch switch (price TBA)

Simple. Cheap. Effective. Of course, when I kick in the clutch with the cc on it now revs its head off. No surprises there.

                Cheers all

Not something you want to do too often. I once knocked my 95 series auto into neutral with my knee (CC on) going up a hill with the camper on. Engine red lined and I thought it was about to warp me into the next galaxy...

Well done. Sounds very simple and effective. I'm sure there's a few more GX owners on here who would love this mod if it turns out cheap in the end.

                        Hi
I have a 2003 GX but the diesel version. I have read this thread with great interest and finally got my backside into gear and got a cruise control switch from a wrecker and a clutch perdal switch but it doesnt appear to work. I have no "Cruise" light on the dash and nothing works.

Does anyone know if there is a fuse or relay etc that need sto be installed for it to work or is the diesel engine computer different from the petrol in that it doesnt control the Cruise control??

                        Many thanks in advance

                        Cheers

nigel, i believe the 2003 diesel engine (1kz-te) does not have the electronic control module fitted and as such will not work. an aftermarket kit will more than likely be the only option if there is no provision on your cluster for the cruise light. the 06 on d4d model is electronically controlled for everything and is plug and play, as is the 03 on petrol.

                          Cheers Batto.

I have a 2007 GX KDJ d4d and it has a factory c/c fitted and although it works ok i hate the way you have re-set it every time you slow down more than 60 k or stop at a t junction. It is very annoying and the Auscruise in my work Hi-lux d4d is a much better c/c, as it remebers your last setting even if you have turned off the car. I also installed a Auscruise into my 80 series and Au 5.0l ford ute. They work a treat much better than the poxy factory one and for only about 500 smackers. You cant go wrong

Thanks for the responeses guy. I am fairly sure there is a "Cruise" light in the dash cluster and was hoping the diesel would be the same as petrol model described above as working this way. Hopefully it will, my next step is to make sure there isw a fuse and relay in the approproate places in the fuse box.
